The Press Enterprise and The Californian report that the Menifee Union School District Board has changed its criteria for allowing transfer requests.

A transfer request is when parents request that their child be allowed to attend a public school outside of the MUSD boundaries.

In short, the criteria no longer includes cases where parents cite the need for childcare as a reason for requesting transfer.

The way I read this, however, doesn't sound like the board will always deny such cases, it only means they will no longer grant them automatic approval.

  1. When is the school board going to wake up and see that people want out of the district when the kids are in middle school and HS. There is a problem and if they want the kids to stay they need to fix it.

  2. I am allready looking for different highschools for my daughter. She is in the 8th grade and I am not sure about her being in the perris union school district. She has always been apart of the Menifee Union School District and now she would change because we don't have a highschool in the district. I will be using my work address to get her transefered.

  3. Does anyone who is leaving the district because they don't like the schools have a suggestion on how it could be better?

The High Schools are Perris Unified School District and Menifee Union is trying to acquire them but it sounds like it will not happen for a few years at the earliest.

  4. The Perris Union High School District allows transfers out its just the Menifee District (k-8) that is denying some requests.

  5. I have taught at Paloma for years and my daughters go there as well. I believe Paloma is a great school and has the exact same students that attend the Menifee School district. IF you have specific ideas of how it can improve please call the principal or a school board member. Just because its governed by the Perris district is no reason not send your kids there. You could always volunteer your time toward the unification effort by educating the public and volunteering at the high school.

  6. We need to continue the efforts to unify Menifee Union School District K-12. We should be ready, if necessary, to have our representatives in the California Assembly and Senate to pass special legislation to allow Menifee to unify such as Temecula and Murrieta were able to split from the Elsinore School District. We should also encourage the Menifee Union School District and the Perris Union School District to aggresively file a law suit in the courts to allow Menifee Residents to consolidate their school district. We should also elect school board members who are strong advocates for unification. The Menifee City Council should also pass a resolution pushing for unification. A major issue in this community is unification and all elected respresentatives and legislative bodies should be pushing hard to obtain the objective of school unification.

  7. I am upset that two Board Members of the Menifee Union School District forces Fred Twyman to resign before October 1, 2008. Mr. Twyman has yet taken the oath to serve as City Council Member of the yet to be official City Council. Also, Scott Mann at the last city council elect meeting on July 9 requested that the temporary city attorney research any conflict that any of the council elect may have. Why couldn't the Two Board Members wait until the temporary city attorney prepared her report? Why the rush? Now, someone will be selected by the School Board and have a "leg up" on other school board candidates in general election in November. With Fred Twyman resigning, there will be three vacancies, which represents a majority vote on the new School Board.

Maybe Mr. Twyman should rescind his resignation and serve until October 1, 2008 (Incorporation Day of the City of Menifee) or at least wait until the temporary City Attorney renders her opinion whether Fred is in conflict on being a School Members and a Council Elect member, whose term has yet to begin.

  8. Nobody is addressing the major issue that appears to be blocking unification. GEOGRAPHY. Half of Menifee students (West of the 215) will attend Paloma and those east of the 215 will attend Heritage. Perris Union High School District is certainly not about to allow its brand new school to leave the district which means that Menifee (which will be growing once again when this housing slowdown ends) would have to send all of its students to Paloma. Paloma is crowded already serving only half of Menifee. Can you imagine what it would be like if it served 100%?

  9. Is there any truth to the rumor that Paloma is in severe debt and Menifee USD will have to take on the debt if they get Paloma? Does this district really need any more money issues?

I wish Menifee USD had control of Paloma but I don't want this to be rushed into and the district to bite off more than they can chew.

  10. Yeah, this whole unification process seems rushed and strained. Is the only reason that unification is being pushed for because Perris is on the district letterhead? That is a pretty stupid reason to unify. Paloma would be pretty much the exact same school in a Menifee Unified District but would come with all of the headaches associated with buying a school off of another district. It just does not seem worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. yes it is. I don't want my kids going to school within the perris school district there are other concerns with having that on the letterhead and not just where it is located. I want my kids to get the same typr of education they get in Menifee and not have the perris stigma I am sorry but I moved to menifee not perris for a reason so if that makes me a snot than that is fine. My kids will go to another school before they go there.

  12. My beef is with Rita Peters, whose mouth is like a septic tank overflowing with bile. I'm fed up with her constant negative comments directed at fellow board members, the public, and most recently, Menifee parents. This woman needs to be removed from the board in order for our city and school district to move forward.

Examples of her bile: "If there are any smart parents they could file a lawsuit against us for discrimination," she said.

Wow - so Peters would like us to sue MUSD to prove how smart we are!

Here's this little beauty: "Legally you're looking at the gray areas and pussyfooting around. You need to resign."

I agree with the poster above who said it was premature to force Twyman off the board! Why the rush Peters? The city attorney was working on addressing that issue. Or does Peters want that job now, too?

These are just tiny, snippets of what you can expect to hear at a board meeting from the mouth of Peters. I would prefer she leave the school board to the wise, articulate individuals and just stick to making jewelry out of junk.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Debbie,

Did you know Rita Peters is the only board member to actually reach out to the teachers to see what their needs and concerns are?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Phoebe Irey is on the side of teachers. Do not say "the only board member" etc. I know Phoebe has always been there for us. I cannot say I have seen any other board member walking through classrooms and listening to teachers.

  15. Wow, with all the fighting and bickering going on at the Menifee School Board meetings why would anyone want to ADD more drama by trying to unify?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Are we having a rush to unify? I guess that more of a decade in trying to unify grades K-12 in Menifee is too fast for some people.

We should have the same rights to our own school district as any other community such as Temecula and Murrieta.

School District boundary lines do not follow city limit boundaries. In addition, school district are different political entities from cities and counties.

Romoland School District may want to elect school candidates on its school board to push for Romoland School District to be absorbed into the Menifee School District. This action may be a different process than Menifee consolidating its school district from K-8 to K-12.

We need now to elect school candidates to the Menifee School Board who will push for unification now?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am all for unification but the problem Menifee is facing and the reason, as I understand it, is that certain criteria have to be met for the state or county board of ed to approve it. Menifee USD had only met a fraction of the criteria and until they meet all of the criteria they will not be allowed to take on Paloma.

If anyone has more info please enlighten us.

  18. To the above commenter,

You're right there are several criteria that MUSD doesn't meet for unification, but several of those are money related. Those can be knocked out if the district can get state funding. However, in order to qualify for state funding, we have to show that 25% of all students in the unified district will attend Paloma. Right now, we're at 24%. What's pushing this percentage down is too many young families moving into Menifee, with young kids. Eventually, these kids will attend Paloma, and maybe by then that percentage will increase. Either way, we're looking at several years down the road until unification becomes possible.

  19. Thanks Steve, its making more sense now.

  20. We need to continue the momentum of pushing for unification of the Menifee School District.

School Board candidates need to be questioned on their commitment to unification. These candidates also need to be further questioned on williness to request the services of the state senator and state assembly office holders, if necessary, to submit legislation to allow for unification of the Menifee School District from K-8 to K-12. We may also request the state representaitves to help Menifee School District to continue with the unification process although an index shows only 24% instead of 25% of the community's students that are high school age. If I recalled correctly, the Val Verde School District had to get help from the state legislature to break away from the Perris Union School District nearly twenty years ago.

Menifee School Board should also question the composition of Riverside County School Board. Is there adequate representation sitting on this board from the developing Southwest Riverside County Region? Is the Riverside County School Board top heavy with Hispanmic and Black activist at the expense of other socioeconomic sectors? If the Riverside County Board is indeed top heavy, will the Menifee School Board request that members from the over reprented socioecomic groupings on the Riverside County School Board step down and a newly consituted board be established that are representative of the County's population. Remember this county school board reviews a school district unification application.

Those home owners living in the Romoland School District should also start pushing for unification of their school district. I understand many students living within the city limits of the new City of Menifee must attend Romoland District Heritage High School would be the high school for the Romoland School District whereas the Menifee students would attend a Menifee Union School Distict High School. I understand that another high school is being planned for the Menifee area. Many cities have multiple school districts such as the City of Riverside has several school districts (Alford and Riverside Unified).

The issue to unify can not be simply swept under the rug for another five or ten years. Unification must be addressed now!

  21. From the previous poster...

"Is the Riverside County School Board top heavy with Hispanmic and Black activist at the expense of other socioeconomic sectors?"

    The answer is NO.
    Check out the current board.

Five of them are white. Plus the superintendent. So, 6 out of 8 on the County Board are white.

  22. Thanks for the response that 6 out of 8 members on the Riverside County School Board are white.

Menifee residents may have to go the same route as those residents twenty years ago living in Mead Valley and South Moreno Valley by getting assistance from the state legislators to break away from Perris Union and establish Val Verde School District. If I am wrong on remembering that Val Verde School District needing State Assembly and State Senate assistance, someone please correct me.

Menifee Union School Board and City of Menifee may need to take the lead in pushing for the establishment of a Menifee Union School District (K-12).

Unification need to continue to be place on the front burner and not the back burner. We need to elect three school board candidates to the Board of Education of the Menifee Union School District

  23. As a parent, and husband of a teacher in Menifee I am deeply concerned with the over whelming disappointment in the upper grade levels. It further alarms me that with SO MANY young kids in Menifee we need to start doing something today to fix the apparent issue with the high schools. The parents I know from church do send their kids out of the district, and the negative things they have to say sadden me. It is a financial burden to send their kids to other schools, and it also makes having friends where you live difficult. As if we need to make socialization any more difficult for high school kids. I just retired from a commissioner position in another city, and I am going to put my hat in the ring to take the seat of Fred Twyman. We need change, we need action, we need our board to get the money, support and guidance from local and state agency’s to start moving towards a stronger system of higher education. I have been sitting and waiting for Menifee to become a real player in SWRC and now is the most opportunistic time to make the changes that will shape our city and its education system. With the input from people on this board I know we can do it together.

    ReplyDelete
  24. In response to Mr. Williams,

I am afraid that if unification is not approved, public education in the Menifee Community will suffer with increasing numbers of private schools or academies be established. This tendency will result in a dual education system similar to dual systems (private vs. public schools)in the South.

Unification needs to be one of the most important issues handled by the new School Board. Will the new Board direct its lawyer to file law suits, if necessary, to allow a vote on unification by the voters in the Menifee Elementary School District. Will the new School Board get support from the area's State and Federal Representative to get special legislation to allow for unification? If I recall correctly, Val Verde School District obtain special legislation to break away from the Perris Union School District. We must have the same right to have our School District such as Murrieta and Temecula residents have theirs.

  25. We are new to the area and I have heard nothing but horrible things about the Menifee district when it comes to special needs children. I spoke to someone at the district office and when I inquired about a One on One aide for my child( who has Cerebral Palsy and is in a wheelchair) I was told that THEY would decide if he needed an aide , computer or any of the other things/programs he needs and it didn't matter what his current IEP says. I have talked to other special needs parents and other people who have attened IEP meetings and they have all said the same thing "Stay away if you have a child that requires the district to spend any money on them." This really upsets me. Just because my child has special needs he isn't going to get what he needs to insure a proper education. Now I see why so many people want to leave this district.
