No arrests were made but a report of a misdemeanor violation was taken Sunday night in an incident a few blocks from where a Menifee Police Department patrol car was involved in a collision, authorities said.

Patrol cars and a Sheriff’s Department helicopter responded to the area of Holland Road and Palomar Road at 9:37 p.m. in an attempt to make a traffic stop following the report of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to a Menifee PD news release. After the occupants of the vehicle were detained, a misdemeanor violation was issued for gross negligent discharge of a BB device.

Meanwhile, as Menifee 24/7 reported earlier, an officer responding to the call was involved in a collision with a pick-up truck at the intersection of Holland Road and Menifee Road. The officer was traveling westbound on Holland with emergency lights and siren activated. Prior to the patrol car reaching the intersection, the light for westbound Holland Road was red.

The patrol car collided with the truck, which was traveling southbound on Menifee Road. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital. The driver of the pick-up truck was released from the hospital. The officer is in stable condition and is expected to be released in the coming days and make a full recovery.

The collision is under investigation by the CHP because a Menifee PD officer was involved in the collision. No other details were released.
A Menifee Police officer and another driver were transported with injuries following a collision in the intersection of Menifee Road and Holland Road Sunday night, authorities said.

The collision occurred about 9:40 p.m. According to Menifee PD Lt. Christina Reveles, a Menifee PD patrol car was traveling westbound on Holland Road with lights and siren on, responding to a call. A red pickup truck was traveling southbound on Menifee Road and the vehicles collided in the intersection.

The exact cause of the collision is under investigation, Reveles said. She had no information to release about the call the officer was responding to or why a helicopter was circling overhead about the same time. Reveles described the injuries to the drivers as minor.

Per department policy, the investigation will be handled by the CHP because a Menifee PD patrol car was involved. Holland Road was closed between Menifee Road and Palomar Road in the hours following the incident as the investigation continued.

The Mt. San Jacinto College softball team won both of its games in a Friday doubleheader against College of the Desert at home.

The first game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the visiting Roadrunners scored two runs on two outs, giving the Eagles just two innings to come back. But they had an answer with three singles, two doubles and a triple that gave them the 6-2 lead. Pitcher Trinity Robinson then recorded three straight outs in the top of the seventh to seal the deal in MSJC’s first win of the day.

“I feel like it was a good performance, but I definitely could have done better and it’s something I can work on,” Robinson said of her performance in the circle. She finished with three strikeouts, one walk and seven hits.

Madison Morris, Natalie Juarez, Alyssa Jimenez and Bailey Heuer (who hit the triple) each recorded two of the team’s total 12 hits in that game.

The Eagles then took that momentum into the second game with two runs scored in each of the first three innings. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Stephanie Wagner and the MSJC defense held Desert to no runs on one hit for those first three.

Juarez and Marissa Sanchez led the team in hits and RBI’s with three and two of each, respectively.

Juarez said that her offensive performance was just her fulfilling her job on the team.

“When I go up to bat I really want to just advance myself 60 feet just so we have a chance to score and win,” she said. “I feel like that’s my role in the threecspot in the lineup -- to advance everybody and get the team hyped.”

According to head coach Jessica Beaver-Brambilla, Juarez was not the only one fulfilling her role in the doubleheader.

“I think really everyone did their job today,” she said. “We talk about how everybody from the dugout to the field, the starters to the non-starters all have to do their jobs and when the starters come out and the non-starters succeed, too, that’s a big deal.”

Six players accounted for the team’s total 11 hits in the second game, compared to Desert’s three hits by just one player.

The game ended in six innings after Sanchez hit a double to score the team’s eighth run, giving them the win on the mercy rule.

Beaver-Brambilla said her team’s 4-0 conference record gives them the momentum to keep this going.

“It’s nice to be into conference and be undefeated,” she said. “It gives us a motivation to keep going and set that goal at practice to keep pursuing the wins.”

Juarez hopes this undefeated record will help people see something new in this Eagles softball squad.

“We’re not the same MSJC as years past,” Juarez said. “We’re a whole new team.”

The Eagles will hit the road next week for a Tuesday doubleheader at San Diego Mesa starting at 11 a.m.
MENIFEE -- The Vagabond Theatre Group of Menifee is proud to announce its first production, “Censored on Final Approach.”

Written by Phylis Ravel, it’s a story about the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II. “Censored on Final Approach” journeys into a time and place often left out of the history books because of the sensitive mission of the WASPs.

“The Army in WWII needed all the male pilots to fly combat missions overseas,” said Larry Sichter, Vagabond Menifee board member and historical consultant on the show. “But because they still had a huge need for stateside pilots to move planes from manufacturers and to help train artillery men, the Army recruited women pilots but didn’t want the general public to know,” Sichter added.

Sichter went on to say that the show will be of particular interest to Inland Empire residents because of the connection the WASPs had to March Field. Some WASPs were stationed at March and flew artillery training missions there in 1943 and 1944. General Harold “Hap” Arnold along with Jacqueline Cochran helped found the WASPs in 1942 and Arnold commanded March Field in the 1930’s.

“It’s the first production of the Vagabond Theatre Group of Menifee, a 501(c)3 nonprofit,” said Sarah Gibbon, Vagabond Menifee’s executive director. “We want to enrich local communities with performing arts productions, top-tier classes, and unique outreach programs. We are also dedicated to Senior Outreach, to take the arts to senior communities – senior homes, centers, and facilities,” Gibbon added.

She also said the March Air Museum is a sponsor of the show as well as the WASP Museum in Sweetwater, Texas, where the WASP organization was created at Avenger Field there.

“Censored on Final Approach” runs for one weekend, April 19, 20 & 21, at the UCC Community Center (27070 Sun City Blvd, Menifee). Ticket information is available at www.vagabondmenifee.org.

The Paloma Valley baseball team remained undefeated at 10-0 with a 9-5 win over Murrieta Valley at home Monday afternoon.

The Nighthawks were the first to get on the board with two runs scoring on a single and groundout before Paloma’s starting pitcher Jacob Melendez threw another groundout to end the top of the first.

Leadoff hitter and center fielder Chapman Weber took the second pitch he saw out of the park and got his team on the board – something that, according to his coach Jason Berni, made all the difference in the game.

“Talk about a key at-bat,” Berni said. “We had just given up two runs and the fact that we came back and responded in the bottom of the first says a lot about our team.”

Catcher Joey Davis agreed.

“Without that home run to give us that momentum, I don’t know if we would have won this ballgame,” he said.

But the homer was just the beginning.

Davis and Melendez both had RBI’s in the same inning to give the Wildcats the lead. A sacrifice fly from Ayden Harrison added another run to that in the bottom of the second.

Melendez continued to battle from the mound, especially after a two-run home run from Murrieta Valley with no outs. He threw a strikeout in the next at bat and a double play two batters later to give Paloma a fresh start in the bottom of the third inning with a tie game.

The Wildcats took advantage of the fresh start and got four runs on four hits in the third, gaining the 8-4 lead. Junior shortstop Brayden Bessette accounted for one of those four hits, and was another batter that his coach noted as a highlight of the game.

“Bessette hasn’t had all the playing time this season, but he started at shortstop for us and had a great day with his three hits,” Berni said.

Bessette said the game was a good reassurance for him and the work he has put in.

“It’s nice that you can get the results when you put in the work,” Bessette said. “It’s nice to have the work noticed and finally get the opportunity to show what I’ve been working on.”

Bessette was one of three players with three hits in the game (Weber and Davis included) and finished with two runs and one RBI as well.

The Wildcats and Nighthawks had one more run each in the fourth and fifth innings, but Paloma relief pitcher Brody Smearer got the win on the day and finished the last two innings with six straight outs in six batters.

Berni said he was happy with the win, but would have liked to continue the offensive performance through the fifth and sixth innings.

“I spoke with my team about finishing strong,” he said. “We need to play pitch-by-pitch, so whatever has already occurred in the game no longer matters. We need to be a little more disciplined.”

Disciplined or not, the Wildcats finished with nine runs on 14 hits and one error, and, maybe most notably, a still perfect record.

Davis said he and his team are focused on the future of the program.

“It’s good to just keep moving it forward,” he said. “Don’t doubt us; we’re coming for it all.”

The Heritage High School baseball team got its first win of the season against Elsinore Friday afternoon. The 4-3 victory brings their overall record to 1-3-2 on the year.

The Patriot offense started out strong with all four of their runs coming in the first two innings, while Elsinore had only seven at-bats in their respective halves of those innings. Starting pitcher Parker Kristall struck out four of those seven, walking one and throwing a pop fly and groundout to the other two.

Junior shortstop Brenton Jackson was the first to tally a hit for Heritage with a single in his first at-bat, then scored two batters later on a single from Kristall. Heritage put three more runs up in the second inning on four hits, one walk and a sacrifice fly.

Isaac Molina took the mound for the Patriots in the third inning and held the Tigers to no runs until the fifth inning, when three hits, a walk and sacrifice bunt loaded the bases for Elsinore and pushed three runs in.

The coaches then brought in Aaron Orenales to close out the inning with one walk and one swinging strikeout, while the tying run was on third.

Closing pitcher Lukas Tello came in for the last two innings and got the team out of a sticky situation with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, by throwing a strikeout and a groundout. He then finished it off with a pop fly and two groundouts in the seventh to seal the deal for his team’s win.

Head coach Tony Martinez said the perseverance Tello and his other pitchers displayed is something they have been witnessing a lot this season.

“They’ve been really resilient this season with some stress from our tough losses,” he said. “So for them to keep their composure today really meant a lot.”

Jackson had two hits, one RBI and no strikeouts.

“I’ve got a lot of guys around me that help me out at practice and it just feels good to come through for them,” Jackson said.

Martinez said the team’s offensive performance -- nine hits in the game compared to Elsinore’s four -- is also nothing new.

“We’ve been swinging the bat really well,” he said. “Those big hits in the beginning were huge for our momentum today, though.”

Other offensive highlights for the Patriots included doubles from both Samuel Blakely and Brandon Alley.

The Patriots will look to improve on their record at their next matchup with Temescal Canyon on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. Jackson said he hopes people will watch out for his team because of the fight they’ve got in them.

Martinez agrees that, although the roster may be thin, his team is one he hopes the community will come support.

“They’re a resilient group of guys and we may be small in numbers but we fight and work hard,” he said. “They’re a really good baseball club.”

Lukas Tello preserved the Patriots' victory with two solid innings of relief. A Hemet man was arrested on assault charges after bystanders held him for police during a domestic violence dispute on Menifee Road Friday night, authorities said.

Police received a report at 5:05 p.m. of a solo vehicle collision and domestic violence dispute at Menifee Road and Legacy Way, said Lt. Christina Reveles of the Menifee Police Department. Witnesses said that following the collision, the suspect exited the vehicle along with a 20-year-old female, who was the driver. An infant was also in the vehicle at the time.

The suspect, 20-year-old Jaleel Harris, began assaulting the female outside the vehicle, Reveles said. Several people came to her aid and subdued Harris until police arrived. All three occupants of the vehicle were transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries.

According to Reveles, the investigation revealed that the dispute began at the Rite Aid at Menifee Road and Newport Road and continued as the vehicle traveled south on Menifee Road. The suspect was believed to be under the influence of a foreign substance.

Menifee Road was closed between Holland Road and Craig for a short time during the investigation.

On Thursday, deputies assigned to the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station Special Enforcement Team assumed an investigation regarding a subject impersonating a peace officer. It was reported the subject was conducting traffic stops within the Canyon Lake community while driving a vehicle similar to a police sedan. Video surveillance captured the suspect conducting a traffic stop using a white Crown Victoria sedan with emergency lights affixed to the car.

During the traffic stop, the suspect showed the victim a badge in which the victim recognized the words “Agent” and “California.” Deputies located the vehicle, and the driver was identified as Steven Sawhill, a 70-year-old resident of Canyon Lake. Deputies located a badge and other identification cards that were determined to be fraudulent in Sawhill’s possession.

Sawhill was arrested and charged with impersonating a peace officer, false imprisonment, and vehicle code violations related to possession of emergency lights. This is an ongoing investigation, and no additional details are available.

If you, or anyone you know, has been a victim of similar circumstances, contact Deputy Stacey at the Riverside Sheriff’s Lake Elsinore Station at 951-245–3300.
One of the longest serving and most popular City of Menifee staff members has resigned her position.

Economic Development Director Gina Gonzalez has accepted a position with the City of Lake Elsinore. Her last day in Menifee was Wednesday. An announcement about her departure stated that City Manager Armando Villa “will be overseeing economic development operations as the City develops a plan going forward.”

Gonzalez played an integral part in one of the state’s fastest growing cities, securing projects that shaped the city’s economy. During her 10 years here, Gonzalez provided stability at City Hall when the city was transitioning mayors and city managers. Last June, she was recognized as a Certified Economic Developer by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). That made Menifee the only city in Southwest Riverside County to have a Certified Economic Developer on its staff leading city economic development efforts and strategies.

“Gina has been an integral part of the Menifee team since 2014 and has led the Economic Development Department with dedication, passion, and expertise, playing a significant role in helping to facilitate our City’s successful economic growth,” Villa said. “Gina’s contributions to the City of Menifee have been invaluable and we know that she will only continue to be successful in her next chapter. We wish her all the best and future success.”

Gonzalez was recognized at Wednesday night’s City Council meeting and presented with a certificate of appreciation.

“A professional goal of mine has been to return to my roots in government relations, and my new position in Lake Elsinore will allow me to oversee legislative matters in addition to economic development,” Gonzalez said. “While I am excited for this new growth opportunity, it is bittersweet to say goodbye to the incredible team here in Menifee.

“Together, we have achieved numerous milestones and worked tirelessly to foster economic prosperity for the city. I am forever thankful for my time at the City of Menifee and the relationships I have built throughout the community.”

Gonzalez’ departure comes three weeks after Villa returned from a four-month paid administrative leave. There still has been no announcement of the reason for that leave, and an investigation continues. Meanwhile, Assistant City Manager Rochelle Clayton remains on leave.

"I'm obviously saddened to hear this," former City Council member Matt Liesemeyer said in addressing the council Wednesday night. You look around the city and Gina's mark is everywhere.

"It's safe to say that 95 percent of city staff in this building wouldn't be here if not for Gina. She came to us at a time when we had a rocky city council, and she was integral in the placement of a new city manager."
San Jacinto College:

The national Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will present Mt. San Jacinto College Superintendent/President Roger Schultz, Ph.D., with the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction during the Society’s annual convention in Orlando, Florida, this April.

Schultz will receive the award along with 18 other college administrators who were nominated by students at their respective colleges.

“I am truly grateful to receive this prestigious award from an honor society I have long valued and respected,” Schultz said. “I have seen how PTK has positively inspired and transformed the lives of MSJC students, including several who have earned the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship and who I have had the honor of mentoring over the years. To be nominated by MSJC PTK students adds even more value to this award for me. I cannot thank them and PTK enough for this honor.”

PTK is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.8 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 11 countries, with about 240,000 active members in the nation’s colleges.

PTK explained that Dr. Schultz “has shown support of student success initiatives leading to stronger pathways to completion, transfer, and employment” and has “taken an active interest in supporting high-achieving students and developing student leaders on campus.”

“This college president has made it a priority to support student success both inside and outside the classroom,” says PTK President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “This award is special because it comes directly from the students, and it is evidence of the gratitude they feel for the support for them and students like them.”

The Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction is PTK’s most prestigious award for community college presidents and is named in honor of the late Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, PTK’s longest-serving Board of Directors Chair and a founder and longtime president of Highline Community College in Washington.
