Aldergate Park MenifeeFor those of you wondering, yes, there is an off-leash dog park in Menifee.

But it's not an "official" dog park, in that it was not set aside specifically for off-leash dogs. It used to be a baseball field that was abandoned for a larger baseball field nearby. Residents now take their dogs there to run around off-leash.

It's located in Aldergate Park, on the corner of Menifee Rd and Aldergate Rd. See the map below.

Map of Menifee Dog Park
While the park is fenced, it's not a chain-link fence. It's a wrought iron fence. The fence still offers enough space in between the bars for small dogs to squeeze out. There's also enough room below the fence to squeeze out in some places. If you have small dogs, I don't advise taking them there.

Valley Wide Recreation appears to have jurisdiction over this park. Does anyone know what they plan to do with it? Will they designate it officially as a dog park, or do they have plans for something else? I put a call into them, but had to leave a message.

If Valley Wide Recreation will designate this officially as a dog park, and maintain it as such, I'd like to see some residents form a non-profit corporation as the "Friends of Menifee Dog Park", and raise funds to pay for a chain link fence, doggie poop bags, and a water faucet for filling up water bowls. I'm willing to kick in some funds for that.

A while back, Todd & Kim Jester, who also writes here on Menifee 24/7, mentioned wanting to build a private dog park. While I still welcome that idea, perhaps private funds could be better put to use by converting this piece of Aldergate Park into an official dog park.

UPDATE: A few hours after posting this, I got a call from Sam at Valley Wide, saying this is actually a flood-control basin, and water will flood this area during rains. But they put in a base-ball backstop just to let kids play ball. He knows that people have been taking their dogs there, and Valley Wide doesn't have an issue with it.

I mentioned to him that putting chain link fence around the area would help keep smaller dogs from squeezing out of the wrought iron fence. He thought that was a good idea. He put me in touch with Vince at their Menifee office. I called Vince, and he said he hadn't thought of that idea. He'll think about the idea, and call me back. I told him if cost was an issue, that I will be glad to donate some money.

Vince is also planning to put in a receptacle for doggie poop bags.

  1. Footnote:
You may need to stay on top of this with Vince, as he has a large volume of tasks on his daily agenda on any given day.
Just keep that in mind if you don't see anything happening right away.

  2. I live in this area and would NOT like to see a chain link fence replace the attractive one that's there now. I also am not super excited about having an official dog park in my neighborhood. But thanks for advertizing this to the entire public of Menifee. The local neighborhood dog owners that quietly and politely use this park now will be forced to leave if too many people/dogs start showing up.

  3. I personally have used Aldergate Park for the very purpose of taking my 2 dogs there to romp and play in a nice gated area. I live nearby as well, and the honest truth is that our Special Assesment Taxes help pay for this park as well as the other parks in Menifee (Wheatfield & La Paloma Parks). This makes these parks open to the public. I don't think that having a blog here on Menifee 24/7 means that other Menifee Valley residents shouldn't be able to enjoy this park too. People will continue to take their dogs to none dog parks just as frequently, and not everyone wants to have their dogs off the leash because of other issues. So don't worry about too many dog lovers overcrowding a great local park. After all, it's just a flood channel !!!
Also, I know that Valley Wide will do what looks attractive and it doesn't have to be a chain link fence. They (Valley Wide Rec) have a good reputation for putting the interests of the affected residents first when it comes to doing things to their parks. They are always open to any residents concerns.

  4. My 150 lbs. Alaskan Malamutes and I want to thank you for the info on the Menifee park location. I would also like to suggest another option. Ramona Animal Shelter, with a $100 dollar donation, gives you a membership to their chain link enclosed dog park. It has water lines to give dogs water, trees, boulders to pee on (the dogs...lol.), and plenty of room, with 2 areas that can be separated or opened up to one big area. The $100 dollars goes to the care of the sheltered animals, so that is a bonus as well.

  5. To the author who left the message on May 18th at 10 pm...It is not your private park soley for the use of those in your neighborhood, so take that Orange County attitude and leave it at home (and yes, I am from Orange County originally, and I sign my comments...Malamutemike.

  6. I also take my two boxers to this area and personally I think it is fabulous!!

There are "plenty" of parks available in the Menifee area for kids to go and play so dedicating this particular park to dogs isn't taking away from anything or anyone. I've never seen it overrun with people or dogs.....

Honestly, every time I have gone there I have been met by very respectful people & dogs who have been great about using the poop bags as well.

Dogs NEED a place where they can go and run off some energy and this is really a great spot. I'm all for doing this officially and would be more than happy to donate.

  7. We recently started using the dog park…..we love it!
Please put donation information somewhere in the park. Or a secure lock box so we can donate.
The poop bags were out and I have no problem funding more. Clean up and water bowls too.
I can be reached at my office number below or send an email anytime. I think it’s great Menifee supports a dog park and I think Menifee dog lovers would support it even further.

  9. YES there is an "official" dog park opening this weekend, May 3rd, I believe at 11am? (I could be wrong on the time) It is located on the northwest corner of Murrieta Rd. and Park City at the back the E.L.Peterson Park. Looks great too! Lots of doggie park equipment. Thanks for all who pushed for this and for the people that made it happen. I know my 3yr old lab will enjoy it as will many others!

  10. Exciting news! Menifee now has a dog park. It's on Murrieta Road just north of Newport Road. It is small but has a separate are for small dogs and large dogs. We've taken our dogs there twice and they've loved it!

PEOPLE ARE BRINGING SICK DOGS TO THIS MENIFEE PARK SO STUPID.

  13. I hope those that are taking their dogs here watch for rattlesnakes, last week I took my dog over around 2:30pm and saw one crossing in front of me, it freaked me out! I'm glad my dog didn't see it. So be careful!
