Menifee in Pictures: What's That 'Shack' Down by the Freeway?

OK, so our editor is obsessed with old buildings and the history behind them. Three photos of one run-down structure on the edge of town?...

OK, so our editor is obsessed with old buildings and the history behind them. Three photos of one run-down structure on the edge of town? Yep, probably a bit much. But he's just dying to know: What's the story behind this place?

Motorists see it every time they pull up to the stoplight at the entrance to the northbound lanes of Interstate 215 at McCall Blvd. There it is, at the eastern base of the freeway on-ramp slope, sitting beneath some palm trees, boarded up, paint faded by the sun.

A sign stands next to the place alongside Encanto Drive, lettering no longer visible. A notice from the City of Menifee posted on the front wall prohibits "human habitation," but there are signs that homeless people have camped nearby.

What business last occupied this place? When? Was it at one time a lounge, lodge building, market, what?

No prize for the correct answer to this one, but we'd sure like to know. And by the way, several of you correctly guessed Monday's "Menifee in Pictures" photo of a dirt access road leading from the south end of Bell Mountain Road up toward the peak of the hill itself, near the Hidden Meadows housing development. Good job!

    2. The guy on the motorcycle begs for gas money. It was once an outlet for slightly used clothig. They even had mink stoles and furs in there. Not a good site for any retailer. Video store also. They've tried to sell it several times, but the entire building is infested and stripped inside I hear and it would be costly to invest in

    3. For several years it was owned by Edna Holder and her husband. He had a framing shop out of hald of it and she had a H & R Block tax service. It was pretty cool because it had a loft. Last I heard which was many years ago she had alzheimers and her husband had passed. I don't think they had children. My mother was a good friend of theirs.

  2. If I remember correctly, there was a furniture/upholstery shop there many years ago. It was owned by the wife of the owner of the pro shop at the old bowling alley on McCall (I want to say the pro shop was called Zook's). My parents had a footstool redone by her when I was a child.

  9. The adult bookstore was in the now torn down building to it's left nearer the corner. There was a gas station across the street as well. The building that is still there does have people living in and around it today but in the past it has been MANY things....real state, furniture....etc. That corner was a main area when I was growing up her before any of our current town existed.

  14. It was Bell Video, Gene's Beauty shop and one other business. I got my hair done for prom in 1987 at Gene's. Two fellows named Robert and Gene owned the two businesses and I think they owned the building. Very nice men. Bell's had an adult video section that was a little alcove with swinging doors. We kids were never allowed in there, LOL. I sure miss the way it was.

  33. It was not Bell Video. My parents owned Bell Video and someone ran their car through the front and stole all their merchandise. They decided to close due to the fact that the land was sold and a Denny's was supposed to go in there but never did. The video and Genes Beauty Salon was torn down. This is the building that was next to it. I remember it being a thrift store and I think before that it was a frame place.

  36. There also used to be a dermatologist's office in that building when we moved out here (20+ years ago). It housed a lot of different businesses, then one day it was just empty. I'm surprised it hasn't gone the way of the 76 station that used to be at the other corner of Encanto and McCall--torn down. Gayle Reed

  38. I've always thought this property quite a unique location has a spacious look because it sits all by itself and the tall palm trees gives it a tropical island stance . lol and in the Inland Empire to boot(no tropics here) yet there could be with the right investor with imagination.Could copy cat this place in Rosemead/Temple city Ca. area ,a place called The Bahooka's it could be mirrored to look like that yet be more targeted to the lunch crowd With a Teen scene, like a sonic, ya know yet with a " Luau Surfer theme" tropical healthy shakes , moondoggie spiced fries, roastbeef in a hot roll.
With a simple menu like IN an OUT does ,
An teens could get car hop jobs an could feel as if there part of something real thats happening ,as well have an open mic type of platform where in (glee) type creative ones could express almost anything from Comedy ,- Acoustic to Acapella singing.Heck with the right equipment they could even sell em copies of performances , lol, that are one of a kind "theres." Any how have know Idea why all that poured out of me, but it was spur of the moment for sure. I'm Carol at bldlphn@gmail.com , thats (bluedolphin) without the vowels to you .Ciao for now.
