A week ago, we ran an article about the City of Menifee seeking to participate in the "Adopt A Highway" program...

The city council had actually approved the idea and sent City Hall to file an application. But after doing so, councilwoman Darcy Kuenzi asked the city's staff to get feedback from the Menifee Citizens Advisory Committee (MCAC) on what names could be added to the signs.

Last night the committee met and discussed possibilities.

The committee members, who come from all areas of the city, questioned why the city needed to continue fragmenting itself into distinct communities. "Look at Temecula", one member said. "When you drive down there everything is Temecula".

Another member suggested to include the name "Menifee" on all signs, so that signs would say something like, "Sun City Community of Menifee", or "Romoland Community of Menifee".

Many members pointed out that as community names become further strengthened, it'll only become a bigger burden on the city. Others opined that developers and retailers don't want to associate themselves with older blighted communities, but be associated with the younger, more vibrant "Menifee".

That discussion segued into a possible fight looming over which communities get to have their names on the signs. A total of six signs are available. It's assumed that four of them will be used for "City of Menifee", "Sun City", "Romoland", and "Quail Valley". That leaves two more.

One committee member felt that Menifee Lakes would make an effort to get one of those signs, considering that many of its residents see their neighborhood as a distinct community. The names of Heritage Lake, and Oasis also came up.

Questions:

Considering the city is paying taxpayer dollars to enroll in the Adopt A Highway program, who gets representation on these signs?

Should Sun City get two signs? Should City of Menifee get three signs?

Are we going to end up with a battle of the communities over sign privileges?

  1. All of the signs should say Menifee, or no signs at all. It is by legal definition, the City of Menifee; get over it already and move forward with life.

  2. I agree they should all say Menifee!!

  3. Sun City already cried their way onto putting back the freeway sign under the complaint that visitors might get confused and lost. How many people actually got lost looking for Sun City? All the signs should be designated City of Menifee.

  4. We are the city of Menifee. Why can't the road signs and my mailing address please say Menifee too! It is what it is, let's put the proper name on it, Menifee!

  5. We all need to move forward. We are all the city of Menifee now and all signs everywhere should say Menifee and yes postal codes please. Let's get it all together now.

  6. We are the City of Menifee! No Sun City, Romoland, Quail Valley, Menifee Lakes, Oasis, or Heritage Lake signs. Absoluty ridiculous. Stop catering to the folks who lost in the election. We specifically voted to be MENIFEE.

  7. When I moved to Menifee in 1990 it was very small. The cities were Menifee, Sun City, Quail Valley. All the cities as a whole were referred to as part of Menifee Valley. Menifee Lakes was a new housing development not a city of it's own. How did it become it's own city? Just like the far north part of Sun City having to pay property taxes for Romoland schools??? That's ridiculous and it's getting out of hand.

  8. When we voted for the name of the City, how many choices were there? If I remember correctly, there were two. So to say we voted for “Menifee” over all the others is sort of a stretch.

  9. As I said in an earlier post - Sun City is not a city it is a community in Menifee, just like the Oasis, the Club - Menifee Lakes etc.
We are the City of Menifee and we will never be united if we allow all separate entities to split us up.

  10. Like before can we also get all the postal codes to reflect the same so when I say I live in Menifee and someone types in my zip it doesn't come up Sun City, Quail Valley, Canyon Lake, but Menifee. This was voted for when?....

  11. Sun City has been around since the early 1960's, and it appears one or some in that community are the only one's complaining. Menifee is a city now, NOT Sun City, we should all be proud of our new city and leave well enough alone. Surely, the lady complaining the most can give directions to where Sun City is to her friends or relatives, how hard is it to say exit McCall?

  12. It's been said before, but this is the City of MENIFEE! We voted to be Menifee and that's what the postal service and the residents should recognize.

  13. Do not order these signs unless they say Menifee only. Council needs to be aware that to continue to go against the citizens who voted for cityhood and the name of Menifee, could cause them to be recalled.

  14. I agree 100% that we voted to be the city of Menifee, don't waste any of our money on signs. I understand that the post office has already applied for a single zip code change that will encompass all of the City of Menifee, so we should ALL be proud of our city and become united. I think it is a waste of money to pay for these signs. Judging just from these comments I think the city council will have more people upset if the spend the money than if they don't.

  15. We voted to become the city of Menifee and I 100 percent supported it. I purchased my new home in the Canyon Heights development in 2006 in the Quail Valley part of town. Quail Valley years ago was none as Qualode Valley because of the Meth Labs and had a stigma attached to it. Most of my neighbors put Canyon Lake on their mailing address until we became the city of Menifee becuase of the stigma. I know as soon as we incorparated I called and many of my neighbors called and wanted the Quail Valley signs torn down. These individual who want seperate names in my opinion want to divide the city when they should be united after all they voted to become the city of Menifee to improve their area instaed of being controlled by Riverside county and being neglected.
