Christina McGrath, a homeowner in Menifee whose story was covered by ProPublica, and syndicated across several other financial publications, is doing seminars on how to get a loan modification through Obama's new "Making Home Affordable" loan modification program.

Her story is that she tried to get on Obama's loan modification through Bank of America and Countrywide, but they dragged their feet, and wouldn't help her out. She managed to finally get one similar to the Obama plan by persisting and demanding, and being a "royal bitch" as McGrath put it herself.

In the end, she claims to have reduced her monthly mortgage payment from $3,735 to $2,422, going through two modifications.

So now, McGrath wants to tell other homeowners how to do it.

Her seminar is scheduled for June 26, 2009, 6:00pm to 7:00pm, at Wheatfield Park, in the "round building". Cost is $30.00. RSVP, as she only has 120 seats.

  1. Too bad she is charging for this valuable information to others. Would have been a nice gesture to make this a free event.

  2. I couldn't agree more with the previous poster. I do not think it is right that someone who is getting a break on their mortgage, paid for by the taxpayers, should profit from the program.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hmmm did he not (Obama say) watch out for scammers and they should not charge for this? I could be wrong...If I was her I would ask for a donation for her time not a required amount (like pay if you can)SCAM

  4. DO NOT PAY ANYTHING TO ANYONE TO GET YOUR LOAN MODIFIED. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER GET RICH QUICK SCAM BY THIS PERSON.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT IF YOU ARE QUALIFIED http://www.makinghomeaffordable.gov YOU HAVE TO JUST BE PERSISTENT AND PATIENT AND WORK WITH YOUR EXISTING MORTGAGE COMPANY. THEY MUST COMPLY WITH OBAMA'S PLAN.

  5. This sounds like a scam to me.
Watch the news, so many of these are get rich quick schemes. You can get all the information you need for free.

  6. Just being devils advocate...is it possible that Ms. McGrath is covering her costs for hosting the seminar? Are there fees involved in renting space at Wheat field? Is she providing literature or other tools? I agree that people should not profit from this mortgage crisis, but I also don't think people should be at a loss out of pocket to educate their neighbors either.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I believe the cost for room rental at Wheatfield is pretty cheap. Like around $100.00, so that can't be her only motivation.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Sounds like a scam to me. I really hope nobody shows up. She should not profit from telling her story!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I have to agree. If 120 signed up that's $3600 for a 1hr seminar. Go to ProPublica.com and you can read her story and save $30. I'm surprised that she got anywhere being a Royal B*tch as she puts it. Normally customer reps won't up with that behavior and will make it extra difficult for you. Royally persistant is probably the way to go.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Other posters here have echoed my thoughts exactly. I'm not planning on attending this seminar, but for those who are I'm curious to know where their $30.00 will wind up (i.e., pamphlets, refreshments or something else). Perhaps someone who goes to her seminar can enlighten us?

  11. Steve, I hope she offered you a free seat for posting. Even though I'm not going but I appreciate knowing about it.
Menifee 24/7 is a valuable resoursce for our city.
btw - I see Micheals is going in next to Target. Anyone know what's going in next to Best Buy?

  12. I totally agree. This information is free to everyone on the internet.

As for the new store, I believe it is going to be a TJ Maxx.

  13. It took me 3 months of weekly calls to my mortgage company to finally get my loan modified. I was polite with everyone I spoke with because bitching at them will get you nowhere.
Most of the mortgage companies just received all of the government guidelines sometime in the middle of May. If you qualify as one poster noted then you will just need to be patient. If you do not qualify, then you are pretty much out-of-luck for now. There are some rumors floating around that there will be another program coming with a different set of guidelines.
The best thing to do for now is to try and continue making your payments on-time. Skipping your payments just to try and qualify will possibly hurt you in the long run and could prevent you from qualifying because a certain credit score is required.

  14. Only in America can someone take out loans they can not afford, get bailed out by the taxpayers; and turn around, and tell their bailout story for a profit.

    No thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Gotta love the entertainment of it all?

    ReplyDelete
  16. You can do this on your own by calling your loan company and asking for the work out department or loan modification department. They will send you some forms to fill out and return. You have to show a hardship. It is not an easy process and you have to be patient.
You can ask for you payments to be reduced with no harm to your credit score while the review process is taking place.
Your mortgage company may have a better solution then the governments bail out plan.
They is no reason to pay some one to do this for you.

Alot of people right now have lost jobs or have to take reduced hours, that is a financial hardship, not buying a house you can't afford.

  17. Hey I got pulled over by a police man for what he called reckless driving, I want to tell my story and how to avoid responsibility for my actions. I will charge 20 dollars for 45min...Nice SCAM!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wonder if you or someone you love were to lose their job or retirement saving, would you still be a jerk?

    ReplyDelete
  19. My gosh, I have never seen or heard so many NEGATIVE people out there. I personally know this woman and she is by no means trying to "scam" anybody. I guess trying to help people is a crime!! What else would you be spending that $30 on? Beer?

    ReplyDelete
  20. actually malt liquor, last longer and is cheap and makes my porch of my trailer not look so bad with all the empty bottles laying around...!!!lol

  22. I'm going through this Making Home Affordable plan. I also have Countrywide/Bank of America who were also dragging their feet. I contacted HUD through www.springboard.com, and they did a three way call with myself and my lender, asking them why they were dragging their feet. Countrywide then OVERNIGHTED me the paperwork to modify my loan. My mortgage went from $2688 to $1670. Try this website, it is absolutely free and they are there to help.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't know about all of you but I don't have an extra $30.00 laying around. I am sure people who are trying to lower their mortgage does not have an extra $30.00 either. Thanks to the people who have done it and are just telling us their story for free.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Since she is saving over a thousand dollars a month now on her mortgage she should be hosting this seminar for free! FREE - just like getting your loan modified costs - FREE

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm not going. I think the fee should have been more like $10 (to cover room rental). But I do have to say in her defense. I don't think she is trying to scam anyone. A scam is to cheat or defraud, she is doing neither. For the people who don't have the internet or want to investigate for themselves this might worth the price.

  26. nothing is ever free, there is always a catch!!!

  27. If you don't want to pay, then don't go.....she is providing a service, typically services require compensation. WHy should she or anyone else give away free information (that she possibly spent hours and hours obtaining)along with her time? Some of you peeps just want everything handed to you for free......

    ReplyDelete
  28. THERE IS NO INFORMATION SHE WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THAT IS NOT ALREADY FREEEEEEEEEEEE TO EVERYONE BY EITHER MAKING A PHONE CALL OR LOOKING ON THE INTERNET.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This information is FREE. I went through HUD for assistance in Obama's Making Home Affordable program. I'm very saddened to see someone making a profit, no matter how small it might be, off of the unfortunate situation so many families are in. The reality is that lenders are dragging their feet, even if you know what you are talking about. So you could pay $30 to hear her speak, but it DOES NOT mean your lender will be cooperative. I'd save your money and go through HUD.

  39. Hey Christina good post.....Ignore all the peeps on here that have nothing better to do then be negative and accuse peeps of running a scam. Thanks for your offering of the info you have gathered. I am sure $30 is cheap dollar amount for all the time and energy you have put into this....too many negative posters on here; I am out!

  40. Christina McGrath:

At first, I hadn't planned on attending your seminar. Then after thinking it over, I changed my mind. After reading your rebuttal here on menifee247 I made up my mind not to go at all. I realize you're upset because many people on here have questioned why you're holding a $30-per-seat seminar when the information is already free of charge. On the flip side, there are others who have voiced their support for what you're trying to do. But instead of an angry response (typing in all capital letters is hard to read, by the way), why not channel your energy into providing invaluable information to those who choose to attend? I hope your seminar goes the way you want it to, and that it's filled to capacity. Good luck tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hey Christina, first of all you asked me to publicize your seminar, which I didn't have to do, and yet you found it just to get angry at me?

Two, I rewrote your original e-mail description to me, because technically what you had to say was a commercial advertisement, which I should have charged you to republish, but I decided to go ahead and announce in my own way, considering so many people need financial assistance.

And three, the people here have spoken. You got your free publicity, and the people told you what they think.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ouch! That had to hurt. The truth usually does.

    ReplyDelete
  43. OK YOU WIN ! NO SEMINAR I REALLY CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW MANY OF YOU WILL FIGHT AND DO WHAT I DID!AND TRUTHFULLY I AM GLAD THAT I KNOW THAT THERE A FEW NICE REAL PEOPLE OUT THERE .....I THINK I WILL GET MY NEWS SOMEWHERE ELSE . THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN RIGHT STEVE. DUDE YOU ARE VERY YOUNG AND HAVE VERY BAD ATTITUDE AND THAT IS HOW YOUR STORY WAS WRITTEN!- LETS BE CLEAR YOU DID NOT DO ANYBODY ANY FAVORS I SEE YOU LIKE TO EXPLAIN TO PEOPLE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY GET FORECLOSED ON , BUT IS THAT WHAT YOU CALL HELP!BEST PART IT'S FREE! I AM SURE STEVE CAN HELP YOU ALL.

    ReplyDelete
  44. wow!! getting juicy..if anybody attended(if indeed it was held)..can anyone comment on it...ty

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'd also like to know if anyone attended, and if Christina McGrath really canceled her seminar.

  46. Interesting!

The loan modification process can be frustrating and confusing for many distressed homeowners. But you have to know what exactly is loan modification. A loan modification is a permanent change in one or more terms of a borrower's home loan.

  47. Chris, You go girl. If the people down in Menifee want to loose their homes because they don't get the right info then screw them.
