With many moms and dads commuting long distances to work, daycare has become a hot commodity in Menifee.

The Press Enterprise reports today that families here are struggling to find available daycare, with every facility carrying long waiting lists.

Inland Empire Craigslist is packed with ads from childcare providers, and families searching for childcare providers.

Last week, The Californian reported that a non-denominational church in Sun City is seeking to open up a child care center. However, residents there are fighting it, claiming that Sun City is a bad place for a child care center.

I don't understand why the public school system can't offer after-school care (or before school care), on a paid basis. That is, Menifee Union School District could offer a childcare program that families would pay for, and charge high enough to earn a substantial profit. That profit could offset the school district's expenses.

  1. Good Shepherd Lutheran School on Newport Road is starting a new toddler program. This will be for toddlers between the ages of 18 to 30 months. It might not be a perfect fit, but it helps to relieve the strain some. Call the school office at 951-672-6675 for more info.

  3. The Southwest Family YMCA offers before and after school care. There are two sites:
    1. Menifee Valley Middle School which serves Bell Mountain Middle School, Menifee Valley Middle School, Chester Morrison and Menifee Elementary.
    2. Ridgemoor Elementary Site which serves Ridgemoor, Freedom Crest and Callie Kirkpatrick.

  4. Many school districts do offer after school programs. From my understanding none of the schools in Menifee offer such a service. The state of California has grants that assist with the cost the district would accrue. I know Hemet and San Jacinto school districts offer such programs. They were once Federal Programs called 21St Century--now they are state programs and are called S.A.F.E. According to NCLB under Bush, school districts are mandated to offer such programs. Parents need to push this through the school district via Governing Board meetings. A great place to start would be by contacting the School District office or your child's principal. Menifee is no longer the small town it once was. Parents need support and under NCLB, they should have what they are entitled to. PUSH the district! They need to get with the program!

  5. I agree with you Steve. There should be "onsite" programs to accomodate working parents. These programs would then only serve their students, and in turn, shorten wait lists.

  6. My Child Goes to a great home day care in Menifee. She offers a preschool program and she interacts with the kids a lot! She also has a nice backyard area. I am not sure if she has openings but her name is Sarah with wiggles and giggles day care. (951) 246-9062.

  7. The phone number to wiggles and giggles day care in menifee is (951) 746-9636. And my son LOVES it! I have to pry him out of there everyday! Good Luck!

  8. I would not recommend letting the school district meddle in child care issues - they showed what they are made of at the meeting last night.
The YMCA program is good - I suggest urging the district to allow the Y to open up child care on each of the school sites. They are licensed and professional. My kids have been going there for a couple of years, and they love it!

  9. Or you can try The ABC Learning Childcare & Preschool. My son loves it there! 951-698-6888

  10. The school board is talking about having after school care at more of the elementary schools.

  11. The Southwest Family YMCA is the worst after school care you could take your child to. They were once located at Menifee Valley Middle School. They don't pay attention to what the kids are saying or doing. I had to take my son out of there.

  12. It's funny, we all are complaining on another page about the gangs and vandalism problems and the lack of parenting in our community, yet we also think more daycare is a great solution.

Why don't people start living within their means so that both parents don't have to work to support their family's lifestyle? I'm not saying it works for everyone, but if parents could spent more time at home instead of spending hours commuting to OC or SD, we would have better families and communities. The key is to eliminate the need for a two-income household, or at least a full-time two-income household by stopping the frivolous spending I see going on in many people's lives. IMHO. For instance, how many times do you eat dinner at home per week?

  13. To Jeff, my family and I have lived here in Menifee for almost two years come next month. I have stayed home with my children the entire time, however its heard to live on one income and my husband works from home. We don't go out to eat, Target only for the essentials and the grocery store. I would love to do day care for someone who needed a "family atmosphere for there children". I already have three of my own what is a few more? Other then to keep one another company! So parents if you do or don't work from home do what works for your family...someone out there is willing and able to raise your children during the work hours.

  14. I have an 8 year old daughter that will be attending Chester Morrison Elementary..I am looking for after school care, as well as transportation from school, until approx 5:30 pm...if close to my home (Rio Vista and Bradley), my son could pick her up on his way home from school @ approx. 3:45pm
    Does anyone have any ideas?????

  15. Jeff, you make a great point. People are too interested in owning a 4000 square foot home then to have a parent watch their children. No one wants to move into a 1200 square foot home. I lived in one for 10 years before I could afford a larger home. But everyone wants stainless steel appliances, granite countertops. I've yet to hear anyone looking for a house say, I just want a home in a decent area with no upgrades so it will be cheaper and so I can spend time with my kids. You only get one chance to raise them...there's no do overs!

  16. I think it's funny that someone would imply that if everyone grew up with a stay at home mom it would end graffiti.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah I know. My mom always worked, and I never graffiti.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I take offence to Jeff's comment! I too had 2 parents that worked. I think I was called a "latch key kid". I never did graffiti or got into any major trouble either. I think it's pretty presumptuous to assume that people may not be living within their means because they commute to a job or eat dinner out. You are generalizing what you think is the problem when you no nothing about other people's situations.
I have been an off and on stay at home mom since my 6 year old was born, until recently. I was divorced in 2004 with 2 kids and my ex, was and still is, constantly making excuses for not paying child support. Thankfully I am happily remarried now and have a 3rd child. My husband has a very good job but it's just not enough. Unfortunately I am still trying to get past child support from my ex (he owes me A LOT) and have had to get a job again to be able to help pay bills every month. Just for your information...We go out to eat maybe once every 3 weeks and also only spend money on the grocery store, gas and getting stuff for the kids. (i.e. clothes, shoes, school supplies etc. ) We DO NOT spend our money frivolously, unless you want to count paying $4.30 a gallon of gas frivolous!

  19. I am with Chatty Cathy on this. How did asking about daycare go to if both parents work your not a good parent and living beyond your means. Get over yourself Jeff. What kind of snowglobe do you live in? What a rude generalization. Have you ever been a single parent not by choice? Daycare is a very important part of a community especially with the economy taking such a downfall i dont know very many people who can stay at home and still afford to buy groceries, not because they are living beyond thier means but because things are really bad out there. The cost of EVERYTHING has almost doubled and nobody has seem to tell my paycheck. So what was completly affordable last year is not this year. Things just arent always so black and white.

  20. I believe we are currently feeling the effects of the housing balloon popping.
We bought our 1600 sq ft house 2 and a half years ago at the height of the housing market. We could only afford a house this size and still have a $2300/month morthgage with our tax and insurance. I stay at home part time and we don't have any expensive toys. We don't have any upgraded appliances or fancy furniture and it is still hard every month to pay all the bills. We have a fixed rate mortgage so at least that is not a concern. My point is Jeff that people moved to this area because it is affordable and yet a lot of us still have to have 2 incomes. My husband brought home over 90K last year and yet it is not quite enouth. Get off your soap box and realize that this isn't 1950 anymore. Moms and Dads both have to work and finding good, reliable, affordable daycare is essential for this community to servive and prosper. If all the double income families became single income that new shopping center would be shut down in 6 months.

  21. Actually there is an awsome NEW before and afterschool chiildcare that just opened up. Child Development Inc, and they are on campus. It is private but are working on getting subsidized funding. They are open from 6:30am-6:pm. My daughter attends Freedom Crest Elementary and they are located at South Shore and Callie Kirkpatrick elementary too. Just to put it this way the centers are all NEW and all their materials are new. This center is a blessing for me and my husband. I was going to put my daughter in YMCA but Ugh! That center is BAD...check out Child Development Inc, that program is worth it!!

  25. I am a single working parent. My child attends Chester Morrison Elementary School and attends before and after school care at Newport Child Development Center. THEY ARE AWFUL! I feel like I have no options because they are the only facility that drops off and picks up my child. I loved Good Shepherd Lutheran but they don't transport to and from Chester Morrison. Chester Morrison does not have a before and after school program. They are just now establishing a limited time program during the summer. HELP..I need direction and referrals.

  26. Wow, listing to all of the families out there needing daycare. I run a Daycare off Hwy 74 for nearly 4 years in Homeland. I struggle to keep my Daycare full. Right now all my parent are on Gain programs and those programs are getting cut left and right. RCOE ended their programs for low income families. I lose parents and kids do to the fact there are no jobs out there. Gain is forcing my parents to stay at home. The state rather one parent stay home, while one gets a job. That is not fair to the parents who need two incomes to stay affloat. Riverside county office of Education put a hold on all Daycare licensing. Meaning even if you were trying to open a daycare you CANT. They are not taking any new licensees right now. Crazy. I quit my full time job to open a home setting daycare and love being at home with my own children and yours. I used to drive from Perris to Long Beach. It is very hard out there, but there are really good family owned daycares ready to help you out. The Wells Family Daycare 951-926-7970...Ruthie

  27. Wow it's hard to believe that daycare is hard to find in Menifee, I've been a daycare provider in the menifee area for the last 6 years relocated from the Los Angeles area with over 19 years of experience. When i first opened up in 2005 there were not a lot of licensed daycares in the area so therefore business was good in the beginning. Then the economy took a turn for the worse and my business started to decline. I provide quality care for all ages, transportation to and from school, home good meals, healthy snacks, help with home work and in the past I have home school, reasonable rates. If you are in need of good care please feel free to call Walkers Family Daycare (951)301-6488)..Lisa
