Kenny Teter rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown, AC Rondon ran for two scores and quarterback Tyler Basham threw two touchdown passes Friday night to lead Heritage High School to a 38-12 victory over Temescal Canyon in a nonleague football game.

The Patriots jumped out to an 18-0 lead in the first quarter on the way to their fourth straight win after a 1-2 start, improving their record to 5-2. They will play at crosstown rival Paloma Valley on Friday in their Ivy League opener.

Heritage got its first touchdown from a familiar face when Teter ran 13 yards for a touchdown and an early 6-0 lead. The Patriots extended their lead to three touchdowns by the end of the first quarter, thanks to TD passes by Basham to Gavin Hooper and Dominic Cyr.

Rondon scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 6-yard run in the second quarter. He added a 10-yard scoring run in the third quarter. That period also included an 80-yard kickoff return by Kyle Basham.

Teter was coming off an Oct. 4 game in which he rushed for 274 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-18 win over Elsinore. The senior running back has now rushed for over 1,000 yards on the season.

"We're giving him a lot more touches -- something we probably should've done earlier," Heritage coach Kraig Broach said about Teter.

Broach was also complimentary of Basham, who has passed for just over 500 yards and for 10 touchdowns this season in an offense that is dominated by the running game.

"In our offense, it's vital that Tyler takes advantage of the situation, with the limited opportunities he gets," Broach said about Basham's passing game.

Now the Patriots get ready for league play, which includes only three games in the current Ivy League format. Broach admitted it still feels a bit strange to open league play in week 8.

"It's our second time through with this conference set-up," said Broach, whose team spent years in the six-team Sunbelt League. "We've been playing familiar teams like Temescal and Elsinore, who we played for a decade in the Sunbelt League. Now league is just three games. There's no room for slip-ups."

Opening league play later in the season could be seen as a benefit for the Patriots, who took a few weeks to get rolling this season.

"In the beginning of the year, we were working through a lot of things," Broach said. "We have improved a lot, but I hope we're not a completed product."

Senior running back Kenny Teter went over the 1,000-yard mark in rushing for the season in Friday's game.
