Each week, Menifee 24/7 honors top student-athletes at Paloma Valley High School. The coach of each varsity sport is allowed to select athletes based on the previous week's performances or on potential shown by the athlete. Here are this week's Paloma Valley High School Athletes of the Week:
Wrestler Gabriel Ramos took first place at the Rumble at the Lake Tournament at Lakeside High. He helped his team finish seventh, despite being without three starters. It was Ramos' second tournament title, and he earned Outstanding Wrestler Honors, pinning all opponents in the first period.
Ramos' first title came in the Hawks Nest Tournament, beating Riverside County champ Salvador Vargas from JW North in the finals. He also helped his team beat defending Sunbelt League champion Elsinore, defeating Jacob Bean by major decision. Ramos is currently the top wrestler in Riverside county with those victories, and also ranked ninth in the CIF Southern Section.
Junior Miriam Mota of the girls soccer team is "one of our best athletes on our team," said her coach, Marie Dillon. "Miriam has been a team player since she made the team as a freshman. She has played almost every position and most recently, has stepped up her play when I put her in the back. Miriam has done a great job shutting down the other team's attack and has added to our team's defensive toughness."
Reyna Galbreath of the girls basketball team was honored for her play during the Murrieta Valley Tournament, where she led the team to victory over Boulder City with 16 points. She also was elected club president.
Senior forward River Recatto is one of the top players on the boys basketball team, which is 11-7 overall and 1-1 in league play heading into today's game at Perris.
"River is a four-year varsity basketball player with a GPA above 4.0. He is an outstanding young man that we are very proud of," said his coach, Michael Pfeiffer.
These athletes are eligible for selection as the January Athletes of the Month. Anyone wishing to order a glossy print of this article with photo may do so by emailing menifee247info@gmail.com.
