Each month, more than 70 personal fitness training sessions are offered to seniors at the Kay Ceniceros Senior Center in Menifee. The senior center represents a growing trend in older adult fitness programming: One-on-one private lessons with a certified Senior Fitness Specialist.

"The seniors love the concept and appreciate the individualized instruction they receive from our trainer,: said Leslie Covey, Director of Kay Ceniceros. "We’ve seen people come in with canes and walkers and then two months later, they don’t need them anymore. These seniors really see the benefits of the Geri-Fit program."

The classes are conducted by Geri-Fit Company LLC, a fitness programming company that staffs senior centers, parks and recreation departments, retirement communities, hospitals and health clubs with certified trainers to teach the Geri-Fit strength training exercise classes and private (one-on-one) lessons.

"We’ve offered the "private lessons" concept for over a year now and have even added a third day a week due to client demand," said Francesca Fisher, owner of Geri-Fit. "This program is a real hit with the seniors. They love being able to do things they haven’t been able to do in years. It’s a very results oriented program that keeps our clients wanting to come back for more."

All in all, over 80 classes are taught each month at the Kay Ceniceros Senior Center by the Geri-Fit company. In addition to personal fitness training, the company offers its Medicare Advantage-approved Geri-Fit group exercise classes which are offered at low cost or free to seniors with the Silver&Fit Medicare Advantage insurance benefit. Group classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3-3:45 p.m., and private lessons are scheduled every 30 minutes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All sessions are booked in advance and by appointment only.

Starting Jan. 9, the company will launch its newest Geri-Fit program, Geri-Fit Stretch, at the Kay Ceniceros Senior Center. This new stretching program combines the best stretches from tai chi, yoga, ballet and pilates to help seniors regain lost flexibility and ease the joint stiffness caused by osteoarthritis.

Although the program incorporates stretches that are performed on exercise mats on the floor, seniors that are unable to readily get up and down from the floor are able to do a modified version of the stretch while seated in a chair. The program accommodates all senior ages and fitness levels. Both men and women can enroll. Classes are held on Thursdays only from 4-4:30 p.m. and an eight-week session runs $30 per person.

The Kay Ceniceros Senior Center is located at 29995 Evans Road in Menifee. For more information on the Geri-Fit class offerings held at the senior center, visit gerifit.com and choose “Menifee” in the drop down box or call 1-888-GERI-FIT (437-4348).
