Riverside Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man who confronted them with a rifle early this morning during a domestic dispute call in French Valley.

At about 1:17 a.m., officers from the Southwest Station answered a domestic dispute call at a residence in the 32000 block of Westport Way. The caller said she was inside the residence with two young children and the suspect, who was armed with a long rifle and had access to multiple firearms inside the residence. The suspect had fired the weapon at least one time, she said.

As deputies were en route, a Riverside Sheriff's dispatcher was on the phone with the reporting party. As the dispatcher was attempting to gather more information, the dispatcher heard several gun shots in the background. Then the reporting party put the phone down. Multiple calls began coming into the Riverside Sheriff's dispatch center reporting gunfire.

As deputies arrived, dispatch reported they were no longer in contact with the reporting party. Deputies surrounded the residence and attempted to contact the suspect while dispatch attempted to re-establish contact with the reporting party.

Police said the suspect refused to speak with deputies and he could be seen inside the residence, walking around with a rifle in his hands. The suspect then entered the garage and opened the single car garage door. According to police, he walked outside with a rifle in his hands and ignored deputies' commands to drop the weapon.

The suspect allegedly turned toward the deputies and raised the weapon. At this time, an officer involved shooting occurred and the suspect died at the scene. The reporting party and the two children were located in the residence uninjured.

The deceased was identified as Otavis Hall, 35, of French Valley.

Investigators from the Riverside Sheriff's Southwest Station and the Riverside Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The involved deputies were uninjured and per department policy have been placed on paid administrative leave.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is encouraged to call Investigator Thurm at the Riverside Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit, 951-955-2777, or Investigator Williams at the Southwest Station, 951-696-3000.

  1. I'm a staunch supporter of gun rights, but it sounds like the cops were in the right here. Good job boys.

    1. Maybe if you knew him you would view it differently. Everyone loses it, but not everyone dies as a consequence.
