Liz "Pee Wee" Ray:

Ten years ago I went to a new summer camp so that I could complete something to attend the summer camp I had attended my whole life. I was not excited. I was prepared to dislike all the differences. I was beautifully surprised. Camp Scherman is a magical place full of an amazing group of girls and staff who have helped shape me into who I am. No exception to that is Emily Boba Blake.

She was in my unit 10 years ago and was part of the reason I fell in love with Scherman. Emily was always full of life and smiles and was up for anything, even if she wasn't feeling it. She always had a shoulder for me when I needed one, even if I was acting crazy. As the years passed and we went from being girls to being young women and adults together, our friendship became even more important and even stronger. I have spent many a night under the stars discussing everything from life to the question of whether or not it was a moth or a shooting star.

She was and forever will be my WonderTwin. She always had time for a child in need or a friend in crisis. She is my Sister. I will hold her memory deep in my heart and when I look up to the sky and see a shooting star....or quite possibly a moth....I will know she is still with me. Our bonds of Sisterhood can withstand anything.

Julianne Lanz:

I grew up with Emily all the way from elementary school to high school. We were in Girl Scouts together as well -- Troop 1000 with Donna Gross and Emily's mom, Jan. Jan even made my Girl Scout vest, which I still have.

My favorite two memories of Emily were when our troop ran a Girl Scout camp and each of the girls in the troop ran a station or two. I ran the orienteering booth and took girls all over the campsite with a compass. During the weekend we were there, Emily had the idea of giving each of us nicknames and handed out friendship knot lanyards. She had given me the nickname of Nurse Betty. I have always remembered that camping trip and to this day I still look back at how much fun we had together.

Another of my favorite memories was our Girl Scout slumber parties we would have at Donna's house. We would watch chick flicks, do each other's hair and sing karaoke. I know I have a disc somewhere with a compilation of pictures of myself and Emily along with the rest of the troop in our pajamas having fun. She was an amazing, gifted girl. I will miss her dearly. I still can't believe she is gone. It breaks my heart.

Stephen Falgout:

Emily, I'm so very sorry you are gone. You are missed. Rest in Peace.

Tally Roth:

Emily Blake was a beautiful woman who truly embodied what it means to be a Girl Scout. Affectionately known as "Boba" by her Girl Scout sisters, Emily taught each of us how to love life, by simply being herself. Her infectious smile and bubbly spirit could bring a smile to even the saddest heart.

I will remember Emily's laugh the most. I know she is smiling down on all of us. Emily didn't even have to try in order to follow the Girl Scout Law; it was a part of her. She will continue to inspire me and the many young girls she has worked with over the years.

Emily's spirit completely embodies all of these qualities:

I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

She is deeply missed. :(

Laurie Brown (addressed to Emily's parents):

Dear Jann and Don,

On behalf of (the former) Canyon Stars Service Unit, we would like to send our sincere condolences regarding the loss of your precious daughter, Emily. I have been receiving texts and calls from leaders who want to send condolences but don't want to intrude during such a difficult time. All want to reach out, but don't know what to say.

Emily was an amazing young woman, and an inspiration to so many girls. While she was a P.A. for our troop, our girls wanted to be just like Emily! They even argued about who got to sit next to her and who got to hold her hand. As former Canyon Stars Service Unit Manager, I was privileged to be able to award Emily with many of her recognitions and accomplishments.

We watched as she received her Silver Award. We watched as she stepped out of the limo to receive her 10-year pin. I was proud to recognize her as a member of the 1000+ Club and as Canyon Stars Top Seller for several years. Emily was the first (of two) to receive her Gold Award in the Canyon Stars Service Unit, and the first (of three) to become a Lifetime Girl Scout from Canyon Stars. And finally, we watched as a strong young woman full of courage, confidence and character climbed into a canoe to sail away and make the world a better place.

I can honestly say, Emily made a difference in people's lives and she definitely made the world a better place. We don't know why some are taken so young, but what we do know is that Emily was an inspiration to those around her and will be remembered not just for her accomplishments, but for the beautiful young woman that she was.

Again, from all of the leaders of the former Canyon Stars Service Unit, we send our condolences and prayers.

Hans Christensen Middle School
Menifee Union School District:

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Blake Family. I am deeply saddened that such a wonderful young lady has been lost. Emily was in my 6th grade science and art classes (right) at Menifee Valley Middle School during the 1999-2000 school year. I remember her positive attitude, leadership, voluntarily helping her peers, eagerness to learn, and genuine kindness toward others. She asked for very little and gave those who knew her so much by being a part of our lives. I will forever remember Emily as a happy 11-year-old with a contagious smile. Emily, you will be sincerely missed. RIP, sweet angel.

Terri Peterson:

  1. I keep seeing more and more pictures and videos of Boba and in everyone she is smiling, dancing, twirling, laughing, being silly and just sending out happiness and positive vibes. I am struck by just how damm happy she was and how happy she made those around her...I can only hope to live up to her example.

I have fond memories of Emily at various Girl Scout Camps helping out the younger girls. My daughter was one of those younger girls that looked up to Emily. I don’t remember a time then Emily wasn’t smiling. She had a silly uplifting personality that made people want to be around her. My heartfelt prays and sorrow go out to the family.

  6. I miss you so much Emily. I think of you every day. I still wonder how much better work would be, life would be and the world would be if you were here and how much better it would be if we all emulated you. Je T'aime.
