The Eastern Municipal Water District announced it's running a "Turf Buyback Program", where they will pay you $1.00 for every square foot of lawn that you remove from your yard in exchange for planting water-wise plants and/or water-wise ground cover.
The district estimates that lawns require 60% more water than most plants.
To help water customers make the shift from lawns to drought-tolerant landscaping, the District has scheduled a free workshop on preparation, design, and irrigation. Attendees will learn how remove existing lawn and redesign their lawns with water-wise plants. They will also learn how to modify their existing irrigation systems to operate more efficiently.
The workshop is set for Saturday, January 28, from 8:30am to 12:00pm. Door prize drawings will also be offered.
To participate in the Turf Buyback Program, you must fill out an application, which can be found here: http://www.emwd.org/modules/showdocument.aspx?documentid=1760
