Heritage High’s football team finished up its non-league schedule with a 51-0 loss at Vista Murrieta Thursday night.

The Patriots (0-5) started the game off with a quick possession ending in a turnover on downs, on which the Broncos quickly capitalized, scoring their first touchdown within three plays and two minutes. That first drive was just the first 22 yards of a total 323 yards gained on the night for Vista Murrieta (4-0), compared to Heritage’s total of 159.

Heritage coach Andre Smith said the game was the outcome of a tough schedule he hopes will have prepared his team for league games.

“We play a tougher schedule than most people, but we do that for a reason,” said Smith. “Our kids are going to keep fighting. We get a bye week this next week that comes at a good time, then we get league football.”

Freshman quarterback Trey Gamble, who played in the pocket for the Patriots for the second half of the game, has the same vision as Smith.

“We’re here to win the league,” said Gamble. “I’m just going to go out and make more plays with my teammates; they make the plays for me. We’re here to win it.”

Gamble, who is set to start for the Patriots in their next game, saw his first varsity action in the second half. Smith said his performance and ability to step up was one of the things he was proud of in his team.

“There are some victories going on in our locker room that I’m happy about,” said Smith. “The record is bad, but culture-wise, there’s some good stuff going on with our kids that I’m excited about.”

Other wins Smith mentioned included running back Angelo Serena’s 53 yards rushed on the night and the defense that played “real football, not with their heads down; they played hard,” according to Smith.

Heritage will play at home against Elsinore High (4-1) on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
