As the weekend heat wave continues, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department has issued a reminder to pet owners that their animals need protection as well.

In a news release, the department's 3-month-old Bloodhound "Cooper" was pictured as an example of animals that can succumb to heatstroke and suffocation if left in a vehicle on a hot day. Officials warn residents not to leave any animal in a parked car, even for a short time with the air conditioning on. Air compressors can fail when engines become overheated.

Tips from the Sheriff's Department:

-- Leave your pets at home.

-- On trips with your pet, bring plenty of fresh drinking water and a bowl.

-- Give them plenty of breaks in the shade.

-- Take your pet to the veterinarian immediately if you see signs of heat exhaustion, which includes restlessness, excessive thirst, heavy panting, lethargy, dark tongue, rapid pulse, fever, vomiting, glazed eyes, dizziness, or lack of coordination.

Leaving an animal confined in an unattended vehicle is actually a crime under Penal Code section 597.7

  1. I don't practice leaving my dogs in cars on hot sunny days. But I noticed that Menifee area even Perris over by Home Depot all cut the heck out of their trees in the parking lots. As a shopper I would love to park under trickled shade. I love Walmart in Murietta and their solar panels that are parking lot shade. I've had to run places and have my dogs with me because I'm having work done on my house and so doggies go with me to drop another person off to sho had I've had to wait in the car for them to get finished shopping and you can't find any parking under any trees in this area. Shouldn't we make our community people escaping from the heat in parking their car friendly. More people might stop along their way somewhere and spend money here if it were known for great shaded parking lots. And how come when a city plants trees it's not a tree that feeds people like apple plum avocado etc.,,,, I can't figure that one out. It would save a lot of children from going hungry.
