Vacations generally require several hours of planning and preparation, but when you plan on leaving, do you remember to ensure your home stays safe while you are away?

Planning for every possible scenario is not something we normally think about, but State Farm is trained to plan ahead and will gladly help you do so. Like a good neighbor, local State Farm agent Lisa Perez Houghtaling is there to help you keep your house secure even when you’re not actually there.

Here’s a checklist to help you prepare your house for your absence:

□ DO NOT share your travel itinerary on social media. This day and age, it is all too easy to over share, making it easier for potential burglars to plan accordingly.
□ Ask a neighbor or friend to pick up your newspaper and bring in your mail. Especially if you are expecting any packages, have someone you trust keep them until you return.
□ Keep your valuables in a safe deposit box that is not inside your home. Home mortgages, vehicle registration, passports, and expensive jewelry should be kept off-site.
□ Trim trees and shrubs that are close to your actual home so intruders can’t hide behind them to scale the perimeter of your house.
□ Continue snow or lawn service. An un-shoveled winter driveway or an uncut summer lawn can be a red flag. Keeping these items maintained can deter burglars from targeting your home.
□ Close your blinds and curtains so as to obstruct a direct view into your home, especially where expensive electronics could be visible.
□ Install light timers and motion sensors.
□ Secure sliding glass doors with a wooden pole or thick dowel that matches the length of the sliding track.
□ Putting in a home security system is always a worthwhile investment.
□ Unplug unnecessary appliances such as the toaster, coffee maker, microwave, television, and computer to reduce wasted energy and prevent potential fires.
□ Turn off the main water valve.
□ And if you can, your best bet might be to hire a highly trusted house sitter.

Home is where your family grows and celebrates. It’s where you live out your dreams and may also be your biggest investment. But in an instant, theft while you’re away or a fire or damage resulting from other perils can happen and you could lose it all. Call the Lisa Perez Houghtaling State Farm agency today and they will help you get the protection you need.
