Fitness 19 Announces Opening of a New Gym in Menifee, but Sale of Property, City Approval Must Take Place First

The search for a new tenant to occupy the vacant Albertson's grocery store at Newport Road and Murrieta Road may be coming to an end.

Red Mountain Retail Group on Thursday submitted an application for tenant improvements at the Albertson's location, which has been vacant since the store closed its doors in February 2011. That application still has to go before the Planning Commission, however. In addition, according to Eric Nelson of Red Mountain, escrow on the sale of the property from Albertson's to his company will not close for a few weeks.

But that hasn't stopped one business from advertising for clients and promoting that site as its new home.

Fitness 19, which already has gym locations in Temecula, Wildomar and Murrieta, mailed promotional fliers to Menifee residents this week, advertising a new location planned for the "former Albertson's" in Menifee. The chain, which has more than 170 locations across the country, promotes itself as a more affordable workout facility than its competitors.

Fitness 19's standard membership fee is $19 per month. In this promotion, however, the first 150 people to call and reserve a spot in the new gym are promised a $9 per month fee for life. According to Micah Brock, a regional supervisor for Fitness 19, there were about 50 spots left at that rate as of Friday morning.

"They're almost gone," he said. "After that, we offer 150 people $12 a month. We're not taking any revenue at this point, just allowing people to reserve spots. We should be open in two or three months. There's not a lot of demo work to do in there."

As Nelson confirmed, however, there's no way any business could open in that location that soon. In fact, he was unaware Fitness 19 had begun promoting a business there.

"It's news to me," he said. "We don't even close escrow until later this month. We have cut a deal with the gym to lease about 30 percent of the property, but I'm always cautious until sales are finalized and city approval is granted. It's a long process."

Asked whether it was possible his company could clear all the hurdles in time for Fitness 19 to open in the next three months, Nelson said, "There's no way it could be that soon."

Nelson said the property space is 56,121 square feet. About 18,000 of that would be devoted to the gym. He said the most likely scenario is to divide the property into three businesses. Red Mountain officials are hopeful of attracting a discount grocery store for one of the spot, he said, but that the return of a big chain supermarket is not likely.

"We've gone to all the big grocery stores," Nelson said. "Nobody is interested in that site. Because it was already an Albertson's, none of them are interested in stepping into that space. But we love that site, we love Menifee, and we know this is a great opportunity to bring businesses back to that center."

Nelson said his group is purchasing only the part of the complex formerly owned by Albertson's. The adjoining business space is owned by another company.

According to Brock, the Fitness 19 gym would be almost twice the size of other local Fitness 19 gyms. According to him, the gym would not include a pool but would have a variety of workout machines and would offer about 50 aerobics classes per week.

Menifee 24/7 is conducting a contest asking readers what type of business they would like to see there. We're offering a $50 VISA card to the person emailing the best suggestion to menifee247info@gmail.com. Because of this news, our contest deadline has been moved to 5 p.m. today. Readers are encouraged to continue sending ideas about any kind of business for that location. Even if Fitness 19 is approved, it will not be the only tenant there.

  5. My husband and I think that the old Alberrtson's spot would be the perfect location for a Trader Joe's. We love shopping at the store but rarely do so because of the distance and the hassle of traffic in Temecula. It would bring in lots of tax revenues for Menifee, and provides a variety of services and products in a single location.

    1. Can contact Fitness 19 in Wildomar and have them keep you up to date on your e-mail. At least thats what they told me. Apparently the Menifee site has yet to be placed on their web site.

    2. I would just call back and explain that to them and I'm sure they'll take care of you. They were very nice, not sales people like some gyms I've been a member of before.

  7. Sorry, but that won't bring in much taxes for the city, poor choice. How many gyms are there in Menifee currently?

  8. I think we desperately need a health food store such as Sprouts, Trader Joe's or Barons market. For those of us who like/need to eat more healthy with products which are organic, gluten free, sugar free, etc. Von's, Stater's, and Ralph's just do not provide enough healthy food options. And some of us seniors are not able to drive out of town to get the healthy food we need.

  11. I think F19 and health store along with a fun kid center of some sort. That will attract a lot of people and believe it will drive people into that center and ultimately fill the other vacant store fronts.

  14. A Fresh and Easy would be perfect for that spot or a Whole Foods store, need more shopping options that provide a healthier alternative. We can't wait until it opens definately a more affordable alternative.

  21. When is going to open? I cannot afford any of the local gyms in Menifee. I was one of the first to call and reserve 2 spots one for me and one for my daughter. That was a while ago.
We have enough grocery stores in the area. I like the fact of having a affordable gym in the area with having to drive far.

  22. I've noticed absolutely no activity going on within that old Albertsons. Clearly they'll not be making good on their claims of it opening in the next month, for whatever reason (I somehow get the feel that its not on their end, but ridiculous escrow and city counsel red tape mucking it up).

That said, I believe the proper recourse here would be to offer the use of one of their other facilities for those on the lifetime discount lists, until or unless they actually do get this location squared away. Otherwise, I don't think that's right (no matter where the fault of the delay rests). They advertised the opening within three months. It's not happened (and if the utter lack of activity on location is any indication, it sure won't be within the next month), meanwhile those of us who would only be able to afford to go to a gym because of that discount offer are marooned at this point. A solution that would make everyone happy in this stalemate would be to allow us the option of using another location with our discounts intact instead and then we can transfer over to the Menifee location, when or if it actually does happen.

But I would also like to say now pertaining to whatever or whoever the holdup is: get out of the way. We both want and in fact need this Fitness 19 here. What we absolutely don't need is another damned shopping center (and what a load of BS those were; every promise broken. Surprise surprise.) and places to stuff our faces and further thin our wallets. What we don't have is a budget-justifiable gym without all the ridiculous and costly elitist frills and gimmicks as per the 'health club' varieties.

Irregardless of whatever the issue is with the delay is here... they advertized what they did and I for one expect them to uphold it. If they can't open it up by next month as advertized... then, again, contact those on the lists and offer them the use of another location in the meantime, as a stop-gap. It's the right thing to do.
