Menifee residents may experience poor air quality and notice embers in the air while driving north toward Riverside because of a fire that had burned 150 acres and was only 20 percent contained as of 9:45 p.m. Thursday.

Fire officials said the blaze began as a vegetation fire in the Santa Ana river bottom. Power lines are down in the area. Cause of the fire is not known.

According to Riverside County Fire Department officials, crews will remain on the scene throughout the night. Approximately 1,846 Riverside City residents are without power.

Voluntary evacuations were conducted in the area around Greenbrier Drive and Grassy Trail. An evacuation site was set up at Nichols park on Dewey Avenue.

  1. Where was the fire in the Menifee area Thursday afternoon. Smoke was seen coming from what appeared to be near the edge of town near Canyon Lake.
