Albertsons in MenifeeSad, but true. Albertson's Grocery Store in Menifee, on the corner of Newport and Murrieta Rds, will be closing up at end of this February.

SuperValu, Inc., the company that owns Albertsons, issued a press release yesterday citing company goals not being met...

ALBERTSONS strives to ensure the success of all its stores, however, it is occasionally necessary to close those that are not meeting company goals in today’s competitive and difficult economic environment. While the decision to close a store is difficult—given the impact on associates and customers—ALBERTSONS has a responsibility to do what is best for the long-term growth and success of the company as a whole.

The Sav-on Pharmacy inside the store will actually close much earlier, on January 18th. All prescription files will be transferred to nearby competing pharmacies. A sign will be posted at the pharmacy counter regarding this.

As for what will become of the employees who work at Albertsons, some of them will be absorbed into other Albertsons nearby, while others will be laid off, all of which to be determined by seniority.

The people who work inside the Wells Fargo bank branch seemed to be breathing easily however. I asked a teller what would become of their jobs, and was told their jobs are all secure and will be transitioned to other branches.

And what of the Starbucks inside Albertsons? Those workers are actually Albertsons employees. They'll either be transferred or laid off by seniority, going into whatever positions are available.

Albertsons is what is known as the "anchor store" for Sun City Plaza, the shopping center it's located in. Much of the other stores there rely on Albertsons traffic for their own business.

The Smoke Shop, located immediately next door to Albertsons, does most of its advertising in the Pennysaver, but otherwise relies on Albertsons shoppers for visibility. The woman working behind the counter there seemed disappointed. "All of the businesses in Sun City Plaza are hurting right now with the bad economy" she told me. "It's going to hurt even more when Albertsons goes away."

As for what will take Albertsons place once they vacate? No one seems to know right now. Some of the employees I talked to said no one knew. Albertsons actually owns that building, and based on what employees mentioned to me, the store had tried to find a buyer but had no luck.

  1. Wow. I am a chef and this is the only nearby store that I actually enjoy....Looks like I'll now be combo shopping @ Vons in Lake Elsinore on Grape St (waaaay more modern than Sun City Vons,Ralphs or Menifee Stater's) and WinCo foods on Ethanac.

  2. Albertsons is way over priced which is the reason that most of us choose to shop elsewhere.

It seems that a lot of these larger grocery stores were unable to bounce back from the Union strikes of some years ago.

  3. we don't shop there often as we find their prices a bit high but sad to see them go...hope something comes in there soon....

  5. This store needs to stay open. I've been shopping there for 11 yrs. and it feels like family. Every time I go in there they are all so nice and I feel welcomed. When I go to Stater Bros they are all so mean I hate going there. I don't like the Albertson's on Scott rd. because it's snoby. Everyone today, customers, were all so upset about this. The pharmacy people are wonderful and I hate to loose that feel of them knowing me and always taking care of us. I hate to see any of those employee's being laid off they are all so wonderful.Don't close the store it would be a hardship for so many people.

  6. Extremely sad...we go there for everything...banking, starbucks, meds, flowers for the wife, groceries, redbox, etc. It's an outing and an "experience" when we go there, not just a trip to the store. I really hope this does not happen. Stater bros has horrible service, smells bad, and is just not as fun to go to....Hang on Albertsons and don't go!

  7. I live near the college. If traffic on Newport coming from the I-215 wasn't so bad, I would have shopped there more often. As it is, I end up shopping on the Scott Rd branch just to avoid the snarl from the freeway, mall, and Hemet. For the community,I'm still sorry to see it go.

  8. Anonymous @2:55AM, good point. I live near La Ladera Park, and I don't shop at Ralphs for the same reason, too much traffic getting over the 215.

  10. That area needs to be modernized anyway. This gives it a chance and hopefully more jobs for the area.

  11. Lets hope the building doesn't stay vacant too long, it can turn into a very large eye sore...

  12. They are closing because they were not competitive. We have been living here for 14 years. We always shopped at Albertsons because we felt that SB was, and still is, a dump. Then came the strike. My wife is a Teamster member so we (begrudgenly(sic?) honored the picket line. We realized the price difference and all of a sudden shopping in a dump wasn't all that bad. Prices at Albertsons seemed almost ridiculously high. Plus Coors Light has been on sale there (SB) for almost 5 years. Albertson's and Stators both remodeled. Albertsons became a really nice store and Stators upgraded a to somewhat higher level of a dump. Bottom line. If you don't compete, especially if your competition is on the next corner, your going bye-bye. I really hope something happens there soon or the other business' might wither on the vine. But with Albertsons owning the building and previous attempts to sell it failing, it may be a while.

  13. Paul, I spent 10 years growing up in the barrios of Santa Ana. Trust me, the Stater Bros in Menifee is a very clean, good smelling store, in my opinion.

  14. I digress on my comment Steve, somewhat. I should have been more specific. As growing up in L.A. and deploying to the Far East six times while in the Military, SB in Menifee is very clean. It's clean by any standards. It's just old(er). With the growth explosion over the last several years here, there have new stores built to service the new populace. You walk into a newer store, Benton Rd., Clinton Kieth and so on, our store is depressing. If my comment was interpretated (which I can see how it could be) as a slap at on how our Stator Brothers is maintained by Rueban(?) and staff, I do apologize. As you stated Steve. It is clean and staffed by very helpful and likeable employees. Not sure how "anonymous 1/7/2011 2 6:32" came up with the conclusion that the people there are "mean". Never had a problem there. Helpful and knowledgeable on where product is. And they do have the best meat dept. outside of an actual butcher shop. Maybe he/she wants them to break into an Irish jig when they walk in.

  15. Henrys Market would be great there.....

  16. I like Henry's but the place is too big. It would have to be called Mega Henry's or something like that. I think Albertson's is looking ahead and seeing the Super Walmart taking away more of its customers.

Does anybody know if the Fresh & Easy is still being planned for the Menifee Rd/Newport Rd corner?

  17. The employees at Albertson's are extremely friendly and courteous. Those are qualities I look for in customer service where I spend my money.

  18. My friend tried to post here several times, but her posts never made it? Anyway, her point was that she (and I) feel there is a real need in this area for a grocery store handling more organic, health oriented fare -- something like a Henrys. If sauch a store could be attracted to this location, I think it would be a success, not hurting for business.

  19. Oh yes!!A Henry's,Sprouts or Fresh & Easy would be great & a health benefit which we all need!!!
