A person by the name of "ceecee" posted a message on the Menifee Topix forum complaining about manure smell permeating into the Tierra Shores community. She wants to know what can be done about it.

Here's her message...

I am very concerned about the supposed "manure" smell that is permeating the air at Tierra Shores subdivision. I am beginnning to have respiratory problems, headaches and the smell, especially at night, is sickening. It has more of a chemical nature and doesn't really smell like manure. What can we as residents do? I have only lived in the subdivision 2 months and I am regretting it at this point because I am afraid of the effects this is having on my body and afraid that it will have a lasting effect on the children etc of this area. Shouldn't the "farm", if that is where it is truly coming from find another way to emit their chemicals into the air? If anyone else knows what to do please post here and let know.

I don't believe this is a code enforcement matter, but maybe a larger matter regarding the spreading of sludge. I've been out of the loop on sludge here in Menifee, so I don't know if sludge is still being spread around here.

But basically, sewage from Orange County would be trucked out to our valley, and spread along the wheat fields. This is all the stuff that gets flushed down the toilets in Orange County, and then evaporated into sludge. It's chemically treated, and supposedly safe. But, it's been a long-standing issue with residents claiming of illnesses, respiratory bleeding, etc., etc. When the winds blow around here, it goes everywhere.

Do a Google search on "menifee sludge", it's all there.

But hey! At least it's being used to grow food for livestock. Up in the north, sludge from San Francisco gets trucked out to the San Joaquin Valley and is used to grow vegetables for human consumption. Better make sure you wash that lettuce thoroughly!

But then again, might also be a sewage issue at Tierra Shores.

  1. Sorry but you should of thought of that before moving there when you saw the dairy. We saw the models & the smell was bad.

  2. Give it some time, that whole area will become homes, lakes, streets, and stores someday, and will smell just like Irvine.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I have heard that it is not the manure that smells but actually a combination of the urine and the sweaty animals at the end of a warm day. I have also heard that the owner of the dairy has turned down several offers to have his land purchased by developers.

    ReplyDelete
  4. It's called "Agriculture". The area is surrounded by diarys and farms it's gonna smell sometime. You should have driven around the area before you bought.

  5. I agree with you moving here. This area use to be more farm and agriculture and so many city people have come into this area and complaining. You should have stayed where you were at. I even went and looked at these homes for decoration ideas, and thought these city people aren't going to like this....but you should of thought about it before you bought.

    ReplyDelete
  6. There is also a chicken farm on Briggs Road that you are occasionally smelling. Again, you moved here knowing there was a dairy, did you not expect farm smells? I don't think the dairy should have to move, they were here first, and we all moved here knowing they were here. I bought here for the country feeling, no I don't enjoy the occasional odor, but this is country living. I moved from Orange County because of the crime, traffic, smell of exhaust, and the fact that there were more bill boards with languages other than english, i did not fill like I was in the US of A. Close your windows and buy a hepta filter.

  7. I also live in Tierra Shores, and, yes, there is a definite aroma in the air, especially in the evenings. Get over it !!! You should have checked out the area prior to moving here. I think people are moving into the area because of what they can get for their money as opposed to more developed areas. I like it here, because it has a country feel. The agriculture was here long before we were, and they have absolutely no right to be forced out. As for the chemical smell, I think you're nuts! It is a combination of chickens and cows. Moove if it bothers you.

  8. I needed a good laugh!!! When my husband and I saw all the farms selling out for housing development our first thought was wait until summer time. The new homeowners are going to love the "smell!" Welcome to the country.

  9. Why are so many of you so confrontational? The "I moved here to escape Orange County, now you should leave" deal is old. Development is comming. Maybe YOU should have thought of THAT before you bought here.

  10. So you're saying that, people that take a sh1t and flush the toilet, that sh1t gets trucked to be used in crops, and basically, our vegtables? So in other words, we're eating shit? HOLY SH1T!

  12. Dear Concerned Tierra Shores Resident,
I am also a resident and have been for nearly two years. I believe the smells are the chicken farm and cow farm combined. They wash down the cows with large sprayers late in the afternoon which seems to really get the funk flowing heavy around here. Just wait the longer your here the less ripe it will seem.
By the way Steve, we love your website. Keep up the great work!

  13. Thanks for your comments. I was not trying to start a fight and I am not from the OC. I grew up on a farm and the farm smells don't bother me, it's the burning eyes that I get when I go outside on some evenings. This usually means chemicals and that was my concern. I love my home and my neighborhood and didn't notice the odor in the several trips we made to the house before we moved. Why can't we all just get along instead of being so rude and nasty? All I asked was a simple question of which I thought I might get a "smart" answer, not a bunch of nasty insulting comments. What is it with the world that we can't stop ourselves from being so nasty as long as we are anonymous?
Have a good day, all of you!

  14. I don't think people were trying to be rude. I think some of us who live in Tierra Shores, get a little defensive, when someone makes fun or states the obvious about the dairy farm. We are a close knit community and most of us here love Tierra Shores. Perhaps you are on to something about the "chemicals". I personally haven't had problems. As for the cows, eventually they will not be around. With all the housing moving in and cars and noise, the cows will not be able to produce as much and will impact the dairy. I really would not like to see the cows move, but it is only a matter of time. I much rather have them here then, condos or apartments. At least with dairy and chicken farms you have space. Either way, welcome to Tierra Shores, it really is a nice place to live!!!

  15. I never made fun of the dairy farm or anything. I was merely concerned about the chemical odor not the manure. It can be that someone, maybe not even the farmer, is spraying something around here that isn't good for us and if we just ignore it, our children, grandchildren and others could get sick if their systems can't handle it. It does happen and it's not the fault of the homeowners here or the folks on the farms. When I wrote in the blog I was attacked like I was from some foreign land trying to destroy the US. People choose to live where they live for financial, aesthetic and work reasons. We chose this area for a little of all of those reasons, but I had no idea the people around here were so nasty until I posted on the blog. Glad I stick to myself. If this is how newbees to the community are treated I sure hope other prospective buyers don't read those posts. They will think you are all a bunch of terribly nasty individuals and would think you really are from dare I say, OC!
I am sure you are all very nice people but you all might want to try to remember that everyone has feelings and most just want to live in peace and harmony.
    Thanks again for the info!

  16. It was bascially Steve posting this not knowing where he was talking about. He started going into sludge, for what reason I have no idea. Sludge just gets people to read the blogs I guess.

  18. Steve,

moderate the site better, please. Cursing should not be allowed.

    New TS resident,

    Welcome.

Tierra Shores is a decent place to live. I have been here for a while. In any community you will find undesirables (We have some here). But they are the minority (Fortunately).

Also, some who comment on this blog more than likely don't even live in Tierra Shores. They just have nothing better to do than spread their miserable lives on the internet in thier underwear (What a mental picture! Yikes!).

Some of the bloggers may also be unsupervised, undisciplined, snot nosed kids. What do you expect from them?

Yes, at times the smell is absent. It is possible to come here a few times and not smell the stench. I think the smell is the exception and not the rule. Or maybe I'm used to it now?

Unfortunately and apparently the sellers didn't disclosed this information to you. I don't know real estate law, but maybe you should consult with an attorney about this omission.

    Hang in there.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Steve,
Thanks for sharing your comments and letting me know that all the TS residents aren't nasty. Unfortunately, Real Estate Law doesn't cover the omission of smells that permeate the air and as I said, I grew up on a farm so that wasn't my main concern in the first place, it's what the smell actually is. We will look into installing a filter in the house and see if that helps but I am saddened that I can't spend the time in my back yard that I wish I could. My eyes begin to burn the moment that smell permeates the air and I know cow stuff nor chicken stuff have never caused that to happen to me before. It's not even like hay fever or an allergy it is just downright burning like I have been sprayed in the face with something. Then, I start to cough and I can't stop until I come in the house, lock it up tight and drink water and wash my eyes. Sometimes the smell is different and it's pure manure, I can tell and that never bothers me the same way. I am going to do some checking to see what else could be the culprit because I know there is a difference in the air and the smell. This neighborhood is a little different in many ways. When we first got here we hired a lawn guy from another yard, he mowed our lawn once and never came back. Another came to the door one day and we hired him, same thing. We finally gave up and started doing our own but we don't have a lot of time and would prefer to pay someone. Are the lawn people around here all transients who never return? Do you all do your own lawns? I searched for a number on the bulletin board etc and even called some ads but when I call they make an appointment to come & never show up. What is up with that? It's not like we all have these huge lawns to maintain. Call me frustrated! Have a great day and thanks again.

  23. Dear, New Tierra Shores Resident.
If you think people here on this blog are rude, just try to drive close to the speed limit on our freeways! As far as the smells, - at least you know when you're getting close to home. As far as burnning eyes, if you come from a wetter area say O.C. it might be dry eyes, with all the dust in the air from construction and dry eyes burnting red eyes will result.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Your not crazy, the smell does come from the sewer sludge that is spread throughout this valley. Do some investigating an you will find out. I have come across many people who also have had the same problems. You will find it to be an uphill battle.

  25. I sold real estate in Menifee for many years. I showed Tierra Shores homes many times, yet never sold a house there. Why? Because I informed buyers of the dairy right around the corner. Who was you Realtor and why did they not tell you of the smell?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Someone already said it- damn! welcone to the Country! Before I was in the Military, I was a Dairy Farmer and I just loved it when someone complained about the smell of "manure" (I had a lagoon)which makes great fertilizer. So I would waite until the winds were just blowing right and plaster the field near their house extra thick! just to see how much more they would complain.
You or they should have opened up your eyes or should I say "nose" and saw and smelled that the Dairy was there and realized that it was there before you and all the others too!
I say if you don't like it, MOVE!!!!!!!!! someday, America will be hungry and then who is going to feed the next generations of Americans??????? surely not China, Japan or Mexico!

  27. Did anyone ever figure out if this was just the lovely smell of cow manure or is it actually something else that is potentially toxic?

    ReplyDelete
  28. In response to the cow smell, look again. There is a chicken farm right across the street from the cow farm. Cows do not smell like that. Also when are we going to have security again since that witch who calls herself the "president" and her husband ran them off. They are both foul people. We pay for security. Whats up.

  29. I would like to talk to someone that is involved with the association. Does anyone know who to talk to? I just moved in and my neighbors just say that we don't get the service we used to get. I walk my boys around the inside loop every evening, so if you see me... stop me and lets chat. I would like to talk with someone who knows the skinny.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think it is really unfair for you to call the HOA board President a witch. Also, they did not run off the security. We just stopped paying the bill. Security was costing $30,000 a month. Since the housing situation has gotten bad, some months we as an HOA were not even making enough to pay that bill let alone all the others. To add insult to injury, the security company was absolutely inadequate for $30,000 a month. Our spening was in dire need of an overhaul and so far it has gotten one. Our community needs homeowners that will get involved for the good of all of us, not their own selfish needs. Tierra Shores has improved so much since the end of summer. It's because down to earth middle class hard working families are moving in and they aren't putting up with snobby attitudes from all the people who paid WAY TOO MUCH money for a house here.

Related to the sludge spreading, you all need to call the Riverside Environmental Health Agency and ask about the sludge. This is what I have found. Ever since they passed Ordinance 830, which regulates the use of Class A sludge(the only legal class in Riverside County), there has not been any spreading of Class A biosolids period because absolutely no one has applied for a permit and no one has been found to be in violat ion of the ordinance. So, it can only be from 3 places, the chicken farm, the dairy, or Wilderness Lakes.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with the original post person. I KNOW the smell of toxic sludge vice cow, chicken, pig, horse, or any other manure. I have lived in this valley almost 30 years and other farmland for years before. There IS a HUGE difference between natural smells and CHEMICAL, TOXIC SLUDGE!

Mark my words, someone IS spreading Synagro (or some other disguised name) sludge on Menifee fields THIS year! Do you really think that the landowners who have always been paid by these companies to cultivate their fields have suddenly stopped using their "soil nutrients" this year? Would they be stupid enough to apply for permits that they knew they couldn't get???? I think NOT!

With my own eyes, I have SEEN trucks spraying their poison on our fields!

This year however, there was no signage, name or company logo on the vehicles! SOMETHING definitely wrong there.

I googled tonight to see where there would be any disclosures about exactly where all they have spread this garbage and now I find that the plant has been forced to CLOSE, just recently!!?? What do you think they did with all those acres of biosolids after they closed? I am afraid that it is here again in Menifee!

Old-skool fertilizers never did this to us! They ONLY smelled for awhile!

I have been waking up with terrible migraines and bloody noses recently again ... exactly as when the sludge was PROVEN to be here. So have other people I know, in adjoining neighborhoods!

I am sorry these "Menifee residents" would talk to you the way they have on this blog. The REAL Menifee has been a friendly, neighborly community for longer than most of those folks have even been here!

Thank you for being concerned about the health of our growing community!

Hopefully this is the last year of Synagro here gunk here. They will move on to some other innocently ignorant country area.

I can't wait till it's all soaked in, so these horrendous chemical headaches will stop again!

Unfortunately, the ick has to already have perked down into our ground water. Consequences. :(

More people like our new resident NEED to be concerned about the quality of life in Menifee!

  34. Hello Folks - beth shannon here (I just used "anonymous" as I don't know how to make the other "comment as" choices work. My email is bethsafe@centurytel.net and I am looking for a few answers about Menifee.

I am thinking of moving into the area from Eastern Washington (Spokane area) and wondered if anyone ever figured out if the manure/chemical odor was chemically treated sludge (which is dangerous - my son used to have to haul it here from the cities out to the country to spread on the wheat fields and they hired him to do it because he had a HAZMAT license while their drivers did not - that's a license to haul "hazardous materials" in case you don't know.....so the stuff is truly dangerous).

I've lived on and near farms with PASTURED cattle (dairy and beef). Those farms do not smell - you get a light "sweet, warm" odor once in awhile on a very hot muggy day, but that's it and it is actually a pleasant odor to some people.... on the other hand, I've also been to visit my sister who lived near a dairy farm that PENNED and BIN-FED their cattle. That farm stunk with a sour, bitter odor sometimes - because of the manure that was in such high concentration in such tiny pens. That dairy was eventually shut down as unhealthy for all concerned, including the cattle. So if the dairy near Tierra Shores is a PEN and FEED dairy it might have some odors that are not pleasant. And I've been to a PENNED CHICKEN farm where the chickens were kept in much too close proximity and it had a very sharp/sour smell about it....probably upset some folks' senses.

All those odors are normal and I can handle the PASTURED manure odor, but would rather not deal with the PENNED cattle or chicken odor, and definitely don't want to move into an area where SLUDGE is being spread heavily still......

So I guess my questions are:

1 - does anyone know yet where the odors were actually coming from?

2 - does anyone know if the odors float as far west as the Lake Menifee neighborhood just west of you (shoreline drive, etc.)....you know, the one with the larger lake just south of the golf course? That's the neighborhood I was hoping to find a home into as the walkway around the lake looked wonderful and the shopping center for groceries is just across the street from the neighborhood (I'm 60+ and need a nice place to walk with my puppies and a grocery store within "bicycling distance".)

3 - if my husband and I come down there this winter to stay for a bit, is there a campgrounds other than Thousand Trails that a person could stay at close to Lake Menifee, which is where we want to be near, just in case we are uncomfortable at Thousand Trails (I think I'd love it there but my husband is a "city slicker", the sweetie, and I don't want to turn him off to the area with odors he's not used to - he can GET used to em, if they are not chemical, after I get him moved in..... :^)

The last post before mine was in March of 2009 and it is now April of 2010, so if no one answers this, I'll know this is just an old website that is no longer really viable...but I'm hoping for some helpful answers.

    Again, my email is
    bethsafe@centurytel.net
and I'd appreciate any "helpful" emails I can get on the area in and around the Lake Menifee neighborhood.

Thanks again to all of you if anyone is still listening.

  37. Can anyone tell me why there is no phone number online to call Tierra Shores Community office? Does anyone know if they plan on building more homes in the community? I am in the process of buying a home in the Tierra Shores Community and am very excited!! But at the same time, the fact that there isn't an updated website and there isn't a phone number offered to call if you have any questions, kind of makes me, I guess....A little leary. I would love some positive information or feedback, on the community. It's always easier to find the negative comments. Is it true that you are not allowed to park on the street? You can't wash your car in your driveway?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Shannon, there hasn't been a community office for Tierra Shores for some time. The office was originally for the real estate brokers when they were biulding the homes. All homes were sold long ago so that portion is no longer available.

Recently the CCRs for Tierra Shores were rewritten. Thank the lord. You can wash your vehickle now. You can fish now, after you get a community fishing license thru the management company. Parking on the street is restriced, although you can have over night guests park on the street if you notify the Security Patrol.

We make no bones about it, we are a highly managed community. Don't move here if you can't follow simple guidelines. That's the short version.
