There was no shortage of volunteers when we asked the police to decide the best doughnuts in town.

By Doug Spoon, Editor

Having already conducted a “Best Taco” contest and feeling a bit of the sweet tooth, we at Menifee 24/7 decided it was once again time to determine the best doughnut shop in town.

We tried this a few years ago, judging the delicious treats ourselves. This time, we decided to turn to the experts on doughnuts – the cops!

So we walked into Menifee Police Department headquarters this morning with boxes of doughnuts from four participating shops: Jacky’s Donut Hut, Sweet Daze, Donut Star and Krispy Kreme. The call went out around the building for taste tasters, and soon we had plenty of volunteer judges (imagine that).

In a blind taste test, the officers judged doughnuts from four different unmarked boxes. (The doughnuts were cut into bite-sized chunks to prevent sugar overload, but suffice to say, we ended up with a bunch of hyper cops). From each box, they judged a cake doughnut, glazed doughnut, “long john” bar, and specialty doughnut on a 1-to-5 scale. The scores were combined and the box (doughnut shop) with the most points won.

That happened to be Donut Star, located in the Stater Brothers shopping center at Newport Road and Murrieta Road (25908 Newport Road). Donut Star beat out second-place Jacky’s Donut Hut with some high scores and rave reviews, especially about their specialty doughnut – an apple fritter.

“It’s God’s gift to mankind,” said one hungry officer.

Filled with lots of sugar and carbs, the cops left the morning briefing room and went on their way, patrolling the streets and keeping us safe. And presumably, there was a drop in police attendance at local doughnut shops today. Yes, their stomachs were full and their eyes as glazed as the meal they had just finished.

We’d like to thank all the participating shops and will be presenting Donut Star with a plaque in remembrance of this remarkable achievement. And don’t forget to stop by your local doughnut shop today!
