Paloma Valley midfielder Kaitlyn Johnson controls the ball against a defender in the Wildcats' victory Thursday.

Goalkeeper Christina Rodriguez recorded a shutout with help from a strong defense Thursday as the Paloma Valley High School girls soccer team beat visiting Katella 5-0 to earn a berth in the second round of the CIF Division 6 playoffs.

Coach Marie Dillon credited defenders Allison Burnaz, Lauren Perez, Vanessa Banuelos and Felicia Moran with helping to preserve the shutout. The Wildcats now move on to the second round, where they will play at La Sierra High of Riverside on Tuesday.

La Sierra advanced with a 5-4 victory over Nuview Bridge in the first round.
