Hundreds of area residents waited hours in line for three different sessions of free admission Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of the Drop Zone Waterpark in Perris.

The day began with a ribbon cutting and the appearance of local dignitaries, including Riverside County Supervisor Marion Ashley, who was instrumental in gaining approval for the county-run facility. Residents were given wristbands for free admission to the morning session on a first-come, first-served basis.

Two sessions in the afternoon required advance registration, but still residents arrived early and stood in long lines to gain admission.

The waterpark's regular hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be in effect on Sunday and Monday. The park will be open on on weekends until June 16.
