Menifee resident Kelly Maxwell and her sons Tony and Kaden had a fun and successful experience competing in the Newport Beach 1st Battalion, 1st Marines Foundation Beach Challenge Saturday.

Kelly, who has been training with Menifee Fitclub in preparation for the event, finished fourth among women and 12th overall in the 5K Marine challenge. Tony and Kaden each placed second in their age brackets of the "devil pups" challenge, in which youngsters competed in a variety of strength and skill events.

The mission of the Newport Beach 1/1 Foundation as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization is to provide community and financial support to the men and families of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines both during overseas deployments and when training for the next deployment. Many members of Kelly's family are military veterans.

Events for adults included a run wearing a heavy backpack; crawls under barbed wire while wearing a backpack; a "grenade" toss; sandbag carry; tire flip; and other feats of strength.
