Menifee Police Department's Traffic Unit announced that they will be conducting a another DUI/Driver's License checkpoint this Saturday, July 23, at an undisclosed location within the city between the hours of 6:00 p.m to 2:00 a.m.

It'll be the fourth time this month that Police have conducted either a DUI checkpoint or Saturation Patrol. In the three prior events, authorities arrested nine for DUI, along with twenty-five citations and/or arrests for driving without a license, or with a suspended license. Twenty-eight vehicles were towed, and fourteen citations for other violations.

Statewide, overall traffic deaths declined by 23 percent, from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009. Total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades. DUI deaths declined by 16 percent, from 1,132 in 2007 to 950 in 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

Alcohol impaired deaths still make up the largest category of overall vehicle fatalities , with 31 percent of all deaths being caused by a drunk driver.

"A DUI checkpoint is a proven-effective method to lower this totally preventable crime." a Menifee Police Department memo states. "Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs; if we catch you driving buzzed, drunk or impaired by drugs, you will go to jail."

  1. This is a good thing and a revenue generator. I believe that if a vehicle is impounded for criminal activity the local department can keep it and auction it off.

  2. I love how there's an ad for The Beer Hunter right next to this story... "Come to Menifee and enjoy a beer or two, just don't plan on driving home." Ah well, gotta get ad revenue from somewhere, right?

  3. It's a shame that one can't be responsible and keep the drinking (if you must at all) at home, or
At minimum a designated driver...it's just ridiculous the blatant disregard for human life..and drinking/impaired driving isnt the half of it, the amount of people I see on a daily basis driving, changing lanes on the freeway, (damn near sideswiping a innocent driver) while texting or talking on phone sickens me. Just think...just think...for 1 second...put the phone down, turn the ringer off, get a designated driver...save a life, if you could care less for your own, then think about the innocent child in the car or on the sidewalk next to yours...he/she could be your son/daughter or other relative...just think...for 1 second... 4. Beyond the idea of rounding up people driving under the influence, these check points are doing an awesome job at taking care of all of our illegal immigrants and their insistence of breaking this nations most basic laws (driving without a license or insurance, for starters). It's about time the US starts cracking down! And please...I realize that not all of the driving violations these check-points are catching are caused by illegal immigrants, but I'm sure it's a majority. And no, this isn't about race either! This has everything to do with the miriade of financial problems that are caused by illegal immigration...plain and simple.

  5. These checkpoints are awesome! I am so glad Menifee is doing something to keep our streets safe! Way to go! I hope they catch as many drunk/stoned drivers as possible and LOCK THEM UP! I think spreading the word about these checkpoints, yet not disclosing the area, is great too! Everyone will be too scared to drive around that day! Good Job!

  6. All these checkpoints do is harass the general public. If they were truly after drunk drivers they would do these checkpoints between Midnight and 4 am as people are leaving clubs and bars drunk. But no, they do their "illegal search and seizure" as people are coming home from work.

  7. Keep up the good work. Perform these checkpoints every single day if need be until all the scum in Menifee and surrounding areas is arrested.
By the way July 23, 2011 1:55 PM - You have absolutely No idea what illegal search and seizure is. You must be one of those people.

  8. Coming home from work on a Friday after a long week followed by a few cocktails to celebrate with coworkers the upcoming weekend, prior to driving home.

I for one don't mind them at all. Keeps everyone honest.

  9. DUI checkpoints are NOT, repeat NOT illegal search and seizure. These checkpoints need to be performed every week until the scum in the surrounding areas get the hint and stay out of Menifee!
