Mayor's Monster Bash
by Steve
10/18/2007 09:26:00 AM
On Saturday October 27, 2007, local real estate agents Cynthia Aina and Larry Nemelka, also known as "Team Dad & Daughters", will be hosting a fundraising event for this year's Honorary Mayor election at their home office. The event runs from 7:00pm to Midnight.
The Honorary Mayor is actually a fundraising effort of the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce, and actually many chambers throughout the United States do it as well. It allows local business people to compete for promotion throughout the community. In past years, the Honorary Mayor would get their name and photo posted on Chambers materials, and take part in public events as a keynote person.
The Mayor's Monster Bash that the Team Dad & Daughters is hosting will give the candidates for Honorary Mayor a chance to raise money for their campaigns.
Voting for the honorary mayor is open to the public and is done "Chicago Style" by donating money in the name of your favorite candidate. All proceeds from the Honorary Mayor campaign are donated to the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce.
This year, the three candidates are..

Should the Two Chambers Merge?
by Steve
3/19/2007 12:12:00 PM
This is a commentary from me...
The Menifee Sun City Chamber of Commerce is asking its members if they want the chamber to merge with the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce.
This is a debate that's been going on for about as long as Menifee Sun City Chamber (MSCC) has been around, although the details of why the new chamber should merge hasn't been explained.
Often dubbed, "the new chamber", MSCC was created a few years ago after the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce (MVCC) sought to merge with Hemet Valley Chamber of Commerce. This merger would have left the business people of Menifee underserved by the merged chamber. It turned out the merger attempt failed, and today there are still two chambers of commerce in Menifee Valley.
But the facts are that many members of the "new chamber" are also members of the "old chamber". And since a chamber of commerce exists to serve its members, how can members be underserved with having two chambers?
There's talk that having two chambers is counter-productive to the cityhood incorporation process. I don't know enough about the inner-workings of the cityhood process to comment. I know that board members of the old chamber as well as the new chamber are intimately involved in the cityhood drive. How this adversely impacts the cityhood effort, I don't know. I'd like to see people post some comments to that effect.
Competition between two chambers could become more fierce once Menifee incorporates into a city. If a chamber board member gains a seat among the new City Council, or even serves as Mayor, that chamber could gain a significant advantage over the other. Conflicts of interest could become worse if board members of both chambers hold elected positions in city government.
It's interesting to note that the new chamber (MSCC) asking its members to vote on merging with the old chamber, and not the other way around. This is quite a development, considering the new chamber originally claimed the old chamber was underserving the business people of Menifee Valley.
Has the old chamber made great strides towards improving its service to the Menifee Valley, such that the new chamber no longer sees it necessary to continue service? I don't have the answer to that either.
Lack of funding seems to be official reasoning for merger, if you read the article in The Californian,
published Feb 27, 2007. However, like I said in the second paragraph above, chamber merger has been discussed for a long time, not recently. Also, a couple of years ago, Supervisor Jeff Stone offered to give $30,000 of public money to the new chamber to help it grow. This offer fell through because of negative publicity that Stone got in the newspaper. That was $30,000 of pulic money that could have been invested into our community, but we didn't get. You can read Julie Johnson's commentary about that here...
http://www.menifee247.com/2005/08/lets-talk_27.htmWhen the new chamber started up, I was quite excited to join something that was focused on our community. The new chamber had been filled with hope and promise, and was financially solvent, according to ex-CEO Julie Johnson. Today, the new chamber is insolvent and pathetic. What happened? How did this thing fall apart?
As a rank-and-file member of both chambers (I think I'm still a member of the old chamber), I don't really care if the two chambers merge, or not merge. I think that's how other members feel too. All we want is a chamber that provides us with tools and resources to help us succeed.

CHRISTMAS IN MENIFEE FESTIVAL-UPDATE
by Ron Royer
11/16/2006 12:22:00 PM
I am back for the last time with this subject. The festival is being held this Saturday at the Mt. San Jacinto campus in Menifee. My wife reports that she has over 60 vendors, many from the local area and offering a wide variety of products. She also has announced that Supervisor Jeff Stone will be there at about noon to talk with residents and generally share in the festivities. There will be something for everyone from pony rides for the children to jewelry and clothes for adults and a line of apparell for man's best friend. Remember, Tarbell will be holding a raffle at their booth to benefit the lost firemen's families from the recent fire. Here is a chance to give back to those who gave so very much in protecting property in the Esperanza fire. Let's all get out and help create a community spirit for Menifee. We need an identity and here's just one way to help in this regard.

CHRISTMAS IN MENIFEE FESTIVAL-UPDATE
by Ron Royer
11/09/2006 11:30:00 AM
With over 50 vendors signed up, this years festival looks to be better than ever. Tarbell has reserved a booth and is planning a very special event. They have acquired a number of very nice items that they will raffle off and the entire proceeds will go to the families of the firemen that were lost in the Esperanza fire. They have also scheduled a fire truck and firemen to be present for picturetaking. Because of Tarbell's generous gesture, the Menifee/Sun City Chamber of Commerce, the festival's sponsor, will forego their planned raffle. There are still a few booths open for anyone with a product they would like to offer for sale.

Menifee-Sun City Chamber Distributes Free TV Antennas
by Steve
10/19/2005 01:19:00 PM

The Menifee-Sun City Chamber of Commerce is distributing free television antennas to folks living in the Menifee Valley, including Sun City and Quail Valley.
It's part of an effort to help residents get local news broadcasts from Temecula's new television station, KZSW. The station went on the air two weeks ago on October 3, on channel 27.
"The antennas have printed instructions with it and it is very easy to set up, stated Mike Martinez of Southwest Television. "Residents can simply follow the instructions for immediate local news coverage of Sun City, Menifee, Murrieta, Hemet and Temecula."
Jerry Stamper, Chairman of the Chamber is ecstatic knowing that Southwest Riverside County has its own television station, broadcasting news and emergency alerts. "We now have the tools to have immediate access to our residents and that means better safety for everyone," stated Stamper.
Residents can drop by the chamber office located between Coco's Restaurant and McDonald's on Bradley Road between the hours of 8:30 to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
For more information, contact the
Menifee-Sun City Chamber of Commerce, 27994 Bradley Road, Suite I, Sun City, CA 92586 at 951-723-8511.

Let's Talk
by Julie Johnson, CEO Menifee-Sun City Chamber
8/27/2005 09:03:00 AM
The Menifee-Sun City Chamber sent this to its members in response to the recent negative articles. I thought that the community deserved a response too.
As you may know, we are in the news! Headlines from local newspapers include Conflict Erupts Over Funding and Stone Rebuked For Choosing One Group Over Another. It’s unfortunate that we have to spend time on this but your involvement and continued support in the Menifee-Sun City Chamber is important and we want to be sure that we are communicating with you.
All of this coverage in the newspapers stems from a request from Supervisor Stones’ office for funds to be donated to our Chamber at the recent Board of Supervisors meeting of August 23, 2005.
(Visit www.boardofsupervisors.co.riverside.ca.us for details of the request. Follow the link below to the complete request: http://www.clerkoftheboard.co.riverside.ca.us Look under 8/23/05 Item 3.107.
Please note there were 15 other individual organizations under consideration for funding including the Idyllwild Chamber of Commerce.
As noted in the articles, there were opponents to the donation at the meeting. We will not spend time commenting on their efforts, but you can safely say that we are one of the two groups that simply don’t agree. We will mention that asking for the funds or having the Supervisor give us funds as designated in the proposed 3.107 Agenda item was NOT improper by any means.
While the $30,000 would be very much appreciated, we are not, as pointed out by one newspaper, "a fledgling" chamber of commerce. We are solvent and have contingency plans in motion.
"Fledgling"? I took time to look up the definition. The word "new" sounds much better than fledgling!
Main Entry: fledg·ling
Pronunciation: 'flej-li[ng]
Function: noun
1 : a young bird just fledged
2 : an immature or inexperienced person
3 : one that is new Technically we are a new company but we are not immature and we are certainly not inexperienced!
It is our cumulative experience that enable us to meet our goals and weather any storm. Remember, we have grown to almost 200 members in a very short period of time. We are drawing on that knowledge and maintain a positive approach that keeps the focus on our members, their growth and developing our community. We refuse to be distracted from our mission.
Please contact us if you have any questions or comments regarding this note or other items. As always, your membership is the reason why we exist and we always look forward to hearing from you.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has" – Margaret Mead
Now, let's get down to business!
Have a great Menifee-Sun City Day!

What is a Chamber of Commerce?
by Julie Johnson, CEO Menifee-Sun City Chamber
8/08/2005 04:02:00 PM
A Chamber of Commerce is very simply business organization created to change or improve the economic climate of area. It is supported by business membership dues and through fundraisers along with contracts with government entities. A chamber is not a part of any government and often serves as an advocate for the business. We protect the free enterprise system that keeps America vital and strong.
We serve as the community's information resource center as well as the business referral system. When people are looking to relocate to an area, they call the chamber to get information or demographic information. We are proud to refer our members to the community because we know our members have invested their money and time in our chamber and therefore are not
"fly by night" businesses that will scam our residents.
When businesses are looking to relocate into our area, we help them decide if Menifee Valley is the best place for them. We work closely with Supervisor Stone's office to make sure we get the quality business that our resident's are looking for.
Our Chamber wants to bring high quality jobs to the community so that they can purchase goods and services from our members. That in turn provides sales tax dollars which provides funds for the roads, the schools, social services and of course, government. It's a never ending cycle and one in which we take very seriously. I hope that explains what we are all about!
