The deputy, in turn, drew his gun and fired at the driver, striking him in the left arm.
The driver, later identified as Jose Alberto Villasenor, 23, of Romoland, fled but was later found hiding in a nearby shed and arrested, Valenzuela said.
The gun Villasenor is suspected of using to threaten the deputy was recovered, Valenzuela said.
Villasenor was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, jail records show, but whether Villasenor fired the gun at the deputy or not is still under investigation.
Neighbors said there was a woman with Villasenor, but Valenzuela could not confirm that. She said only Villasenor was arrested.

A throng of police cars and a sheriff's helicopter descended on the area after the shooting. For about two hours, deputies combed the dusty neighborhood of fenced-in rural properties dotted with homes and outbuildings in their search for Villasenor.
Bundy Canyon and Scott roads were shut down into the morning while the Sheriff's Department investigated the incident.
Ann Limbourne, who lives off Wright Road, said she was in her living room shortly after 10 p.m. when she heard two series of gunshots in quick succession.
"Pretty soon I started hearing more sirens than I ever heard in my life," she said.
Another resident, Joe Dorsett, said, "I heard some screaming and carrying on out on the road."
Dorsett looked outside and saw a car come down Bundy Canyon Road and hit a fence near his house. "The lights were on and the horn was blowing," he said.
According to Dorsett, the suspect and a woman with him had bailed out of the Mustang before it crashed at Edward Avenue. The rear window of the car had been shot out too, he said.
Another resident, Tammy Johnson, said the man and woman went to her sister-in-law's door and tried to get inside the house. They ended up in the pump house on her sister's property where deputies found them hiding after midnight, Johnson said.
Johnson said she watched deputies handcuff the pair and take them away in separate cars.
"It was really off the wall," Johnson said.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5181366.post-33750076513347670462007-09-14T09:41:00.000-07:002007-09-14T09:41:00.000-07:00Yes, there was an officer-involed shooting during ...Yes, there was an officer-involed shooting during a traffic stop at about 10:15 last night (9/13).
