A Winchester woman died Monday afternoon when her vehicle caught fire after entering an agricultural field and coming to rest on a dirt embankment, authorities said.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, was driving a 2016 Acura SUV on Olive Avenue south of Simpson Road in Winchester about 1:30 p.m. when the vehicle veered off the road and into an open field, according to a CHP news release. The vehicle ran over several pieces of irrigation piping, crossed La Ventana Road and went down an embankment, getting stuck in mud on a slope between La Ventana Road and Leon Road.
Dry brush surrounding the vehicle ignited and caught fire. The vehicle was soon engulfed in flames and the woman failed to exit the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
