Three of the suspects arrested were (from left) Christopher Allen, Jon Guaydacan and Derek Smith.

Plain-clothes police officers monitoring activities at businesses in the Cherry Hills Plaza arrested four men for petty theft and a fifth on other charges on Thursday, authorities said.

The operation was the result of communication between the Sheriff's Department and retailers in the shopping center, located in the Sun City community of Menifee. Business owners had reported an increase in retail thefts, consisting mostly of alcohol, and increasing calls for service regarding intoxicated people in the area.

During a three-hour period on Thursday, undercover officers saw four suspects hide items on their person and walk out of the store without paying. They notified officers outside the store and arrests were made. All four were later released with a citation, according to a news release.

Arrested for petty theft were Christopher Allen, 36, of Midway; Jon Guaydacan, 48, of Menifee; Sean Saxon, 48, of Menifee; and Derek Smith, 28, of Riverside. The business or businesses where the thefts occurred were not identified.

A fifth suspect was contacted in the parking lot during the operation and was found to be in possession of methamphetamine. Jerry Aleman, 37, of Perris was arrested for the drug possession and a probation violation.

Business owners wishing to speak to the Sheriff's Department about future operations to help reduce theft are asked to call Sgt. Kevin Lamb at 951-210-1000.

  1. Now if the cops could catch the white collar criminals who run big corporations that steal from all of us everyday and there's nothing we can do about it. That would be something to read in the paper and cheer about!!..

Im glad the cops helped the store owners who were being targeted obviously. Charged with misdemeanors won't stop this though.

  2. I have witnessed an increase of homeless and indiligent people loitering the Sun City neighborhood of Menifee. I am glad city police was able to catch these thieves this time but I feel that more action needs to be taken before this becomes a bigger problem. Lately, I have not been able to feel safe at the Cherry Hills shopping center-especially at night. I am an elderly women and a resident of Sun City this shopping center is the heart of our neighborhood and I visit it on a daily. However, lately I cannot go to that shopping center without the people who loiter there asking me for money or harassing me at the post office, grocery store, and even the laundromat. I should be able to feel safe in my neighborhood. Petty crime is still a crime and if nothing is done the problem will continue to grow. I would hate for our neighborhood to have a high indilligant / homeless problem like Hemet. We pay taxes and association fees -something needs to be done.
