Editor:

We have lived in Menifee for 10 years and we have never attended Menifee’s Independence Day celebration. We have, however, discussed, while in gridlock of traffic leaving the neighboring cities’ 4th of July fireworks show, how smart the City of Menifee is to celebrate the 4th of July the weekend prior to the actual holiday.

So this year, my husband and I attended Menifee’s "Independence Day celebration" that was held at Wheatfield Park. I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer volume of booths and vendors that lined the field. As I strolled along the rows of booths that were selling assorted handmade crafts, jewelry and home business products, I was impressed with the "spirit of Independence" the citizens of Menifee demonstrated with so many cottage businesses on display.

This Spirit of Independence is so rarely seen celebrated in today’s California cities. Mostly, you see commercialism. But not Menifee. Maybe the secret lies in that the City of Menifee has found the balance between a healthy population of active seniors, with their wealth of experience and tenacity, and young families of millennials who approach life with a new and fresh perspective. Nevertheless, it was quite refreshing to be part of the experience.

Overall, it appeared the festivities were well organized, while still maintaining and nurturing the "small town" feel one would find in any small-town country fair. Everywhere you turned, there were jovial, fun-loving people enjoying themselves, in spite of the unbearable heat.

If you haven’t been to the City of Menifee’s Independence Day celebration, you should. Just remember to mark your calendar for the weekend prior to the actual holiday and join the "smart" people of the City of Menifee.
