Motorists heading north on Haun Road approaching the busy intersection at Newport Road might not have noticed it, but there's a new sign intended to help eliminate confusion for those turning right onto Newport.

The sign, posted on the right shoulder of Haun Road approaching Newport, tells drivers that the farthest right of two right-turn lanes is intended only for those heading into the southbound on-ramp to Interstate 215. Those intending to turn right but proceed on Newport Road over the bridge should turn from the other (inside) right-turn lane.

Got it? It isn't that confusing but it's new, and it's already being ignored throughout the day. Drivers who apparently don't want to wait in the longer inside turn lane get in the outer turn lane instead, then zoom across lanes to the through lane for Newport, creating a potential hazard for drivers legally turning from the inside lane onto the lane designed to cross the bridge.

Many consider this a more dangerous intersection because of increased traffic, construction of the Town Center Marketplace and the bridge project. Problems that existed before with drivers turning into the wrong lanes have increased during this time. City and county officials hope motorists remain patient and obey traffic laws until the bridge and all construction is completed.

Gina Gonzalez, the lead City of Menifee representative on the project, said the city has received only one complaint about the new traffic rules at that intersection. Menifee 24/7 also has received one complaint.

Menifee Police officers are now patrolling that intersection more regularly, looking for offenders. To best prepare, motorists heading northbound on Haun should be in the inside right-turn lane if intending to cross the bridge. Motorists heading southbound on Haun should be in the inside of the two left-turn lanes to legally continue onto Newport Road. Those planning to turn left and take the southbound freeway on-ramp should do so from the outer of the two left-hand lanes.

Traffic turning right onto eastbound Newport Road from the far right lane are directed onto the freeway on-ramp.

  1. The painted markings in the intersection have always indicated to do this same thing and has often been ignored. I don't know how many times I have had people from the outer turn lane almost crash into me when we are turning onto Newport. I do know if this was because they do not want to be in the southbound 215 on-ramp or they just are not smart enough to follow the painted lines. Some of these are the same people honking their horns like I am in the wrong when turning into the appropriate lane. One idiot drove quickly up to me when I had to stop for traffic, slammed on his brakes, and just laid on his horn. The typical road raging, "I'm never wrong" idiot that was out shopping with his significant other.

Then there are the people that are in the lane that is supposed to go straight across Newport but instead turn right. People just lose their mind and turn into total maniacs at that intersection. I think it has recently gotten better during rush hour, but it was total mayhem some afternoons not too long ago. I personally never saw sheriff's deputies doing any enforcement in that area when traffic was at the worst. I have no doubt the deputies are quite busy with more urgent matters and I am not criticizing them, I just question the validity of the patrolling statement in the article.
