According to police, the carjacking began in the parking lot of the Circle K market in the 28900 block of Goetz Road (1). The suspect let the child out near a vacant field on Avenue Roble (2). The vehicle was abandoned near Paseo Vivora and Avenida Govita (3). The suspect was captured nearby.

A man was taken into custody by police Friday afternoon on suspicion of carjacking a vehicle with an 8-year-old child inside in the Quail Valley community of Menifee, authorities said.

The incident was reported at 12:55 p.m., said Deputy Armando Munoz of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. According to Munoz, a woman left her truck running with a juvenile still inside in the parking lot of the Circle K market in the 28900 block of Goetz Road. A man then jumped in the car with the child still inside.

According to a subsequent news release from the Sheriff's Department, the woman attempted to open the driver's door to stop the suspect, pleading that her child was inside. The suspect drove away, however, causing the victim to fall onto the parking lot blacktop.

Upon arrival, deputies learned the child had returned to the Circle K market after the suspect let the child out at an open field on Avenue Roble. The suspect abandoned the vehicle a few blocks away, near the intersection of Paseo Vivora and Avenida Govita, Munoz said. He was discovered at a nearby residence and was apprehended without incident.

Pedro Peralez, 58, of Quail Valley (left) was booked at the Southwest Detention Center for carjacking and kidnapping. No one was injured.

Munoz reminds residents not to leave a vehicle unattended with a child inside.
