What's Up, Doc? Realizing How Time Flies

Recently, I have been shown just how quickly children grow up. At school, I am greeted by students from previous years on a regular basis. The physical growth spurt is expected but the emotional and intelligence development is amazing. A short time ago, these children were crying about every imagined and real event. Today, they calmly discuss events with me.

Sunday afternoon, I was witness to this experience on a very personal level. At the installation of officers for the Jobs’ Daughters, one of my daughters was acting as the installing honored queen, while at the same time, vacating that same office.

Holly has always been the least publicly outspoken of my daughters. She wouldn’t speak much at school when she was in elementary school. Today, I observed a mature confident young lady officiate a time-honored ceremony with exacting ritual that has to be memorized in advance.

What happened? When did the little girls in my family turn into confident young women? I know it has been 15 years, but it seems like yesterday when I was changing their diapers and comforting them when they were scared or hurt.

As I began to leave the lodge following the after-ceremony celebration, I was reminded of just how much my girls have grown up. A young friend of my daughter got down on his knee and (pretended he said afterward) proposed to her just as I was walking by. I thought that I was going to have a stroke! He said it was just a joke but I told him not to even kid about such a thing! I am not prepared for it!

Currently, my wife and I scramble the jets every day to take various daughters to various activities in various cities. I never know from one day to the next where I am going to be at 7 p.m., so I just go with it. I realize that once these next few years are completed, I won’t know what to do with myself because I’ll have so much time on my hands. I guess that I will just enjoy these years and hope that they never end.

Randy Freeman and his family have lived in Menifee since 1993. Randy teaches kindergarten in Perris and his lovely wife Karen teaches first grade here in Menifee at Freedom Crest Elementary School. They are the proud parents of four beautiful daughters: Daniela, 18, and 14-year-old triplets Sarah, Holly, and Megan. Other family members include dogs Scruffy and Max, 17-year-old cat Hunter, and turtle Tuttles. Randy earned his PhD in early childhood education in 2011 and has served on the Menifee Union School Board since 2008. Randy has wisely decided to delete the bit about being Karen's boss in order to continue living in his happy home.
