Isaiah Morrow, Cami Burnett and Christen McGrath are presented their awards by Larry Nemelka of RE/MAX Diamond Realty.

Three standout student-athletes have been honored with the first Athlete of the Month awards of the school year for Heritage High School.

Football player Isaiah Morrow and the girls tennis doubles team of Cami Burnett and Christen McGrath received a certificate and gift card from Larry Nemelka of RE/MAX Diamond Realty, sponsor of the award. They were selected from a group of Athletes of the Week from September.

Morrow is part of a three-man rotation in the backfield for the Patriots football team, which is 5-0 entering its league opener against Elsinore Friday night. He has rushed for 639 yards and 8 touchdowns so far this season.

"I like it," Morrow said about the running back rotation. "I get winded sometimes so they give me a break and I can give them a break."

Morrow said the players are excited to begin defense of their Sunbelt League title after a 15-14 comeback win over Etiwanda two weeks ago. The Patriots trailed 14-0 in the fourth quarter before rallying for victory.

"We just excuted in the fourth quarter," he said. "We just do what we do. We never give up."

Morrow, who also runs the 100 and 200 for the track team, said he hopes to continue playing football at the next level.

Heritage had two girls named Athlete of the Month because they are inseparable as a doubles team for the tennis squad. Burnett and McGrath have won every set while going undefeated in league play so far.

"It's pretty intense, but we're having a blast," McGrath said. I've known Cami since seventh grade; we basically grew up together."

Burnett said the two work well together because they can anticipate each other's moves.

"We know our rotations really well," she said. "We know where each other is going to be on the court."

McGrath plans to study liberal arts at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa and Burnett is also making plans for college to study nutrition.
