One of the biggest and most eagerly awaited recreational facilities in Menifee opens on Saturday when city officials and Brookfield Residential host a grand opening ceremony for the Audie Murphy Ranch Sports Park.

Located within the sprawling Audie Murphy Ranch housing development at the corner of Newport Road and Lone Pine, the 11-acre sports park will be open to all residents. It includes a a fenced skate park (above), lighted baseball and softball fields, two basketball courts, children's playground and shaded picnic and barbecue areas.

Ceremonies will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. and will continue with free activities until 2 p.m. The first baseball game played on the new field will begin at 10:30 a.m., featuring players from the Menifee Valley Little League Challenger Division. Professional skaters and scooter riders will display their talents in the skate park at various times during the event.

"It's a big day for the Menifee community," said city manager Rob Johnson. "We've been anxiously awaiting the opening of this beautiful new sports park, a much-needed amenity for our city's youth and sports enthusiasts, and another great gathering place for the entire community."

The sports park and entire housing development is named for Audie Murphy, a highly decorated World War II veteran and actor who once owned a ranch on the property.

The concrete skate park includes a pool, rails, ramps, jumps and obstacles for riders of all levels. No BMX or other bicycles will be allowed, and helmets are required.

In addition to the sports events taking place, guests can enjoy a rock climbing wall, kids' jumpers, a balloon artist and refreshments. The tot lot, children's play area and picnic area will be open for the first time.
