Update on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m.: Identification of deceased added.

One person died in a single-vehicle accident this afternoon when the vehicle crashed into a power pole on Highway 74 east of Palomar Road in Menifee, according to police and fire officials.

Menifee Police have now identified the deceased as Gregory Underwood of Hemet.

The accident was reported at 4:26 p.m. Police responded to find an adult male unresponsive in a Nissan truck. The victim was removed with the jaws of life and was pronounced dead upon the arrival of medical personnel.

The investigation revealed that the driver was heading eastbound on State Route 74 and left the roadway for unknown reasons, striking a large power pole. It appears the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, police said. One of the eastbound lanes of State Route 74 remained closed for 3½ hours while the investigation was conducted.

The investigation is continuing and anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have further information is asked to call the Menifee Police Department Traffic Division at 951-210-1000.
