Not only does NY’s Upper Crust have the best pizza and authentic Italian fare around, but they are whole-heartily invested in their community as well. Because providing the people with good quality food apparently isn’t enough for these do-gooders, they are giving back to the community through outreach to nearby schools.

The owner of both NY's Upper Crust Pizza place and next door's Whimsical Frozen Yogurt Gelato says, "To me, giving back to the community is just as important as providing them with good food." It would seem the best way he could possibly contribute is with free pizza and ice cream, and so every school month every year he is offering just that.

Each month during the calendar school year Upper Crust and Whimsical Yogurt together donate two hundred certificates to eighteen schools throughout Menifee and the surrounding area. This equates to 24,200 donated certificates worth over $47,190 in just one school year alone.

Teachers at the benefiting schools are encouraged to integrate the certificates as performance incentives in the classroom. Each reward certificate is presented to a worthy student and is then redeemable at either the Upper Crust or Whimsical Yogurt locations in Menifee.

Smiling students simply present their hard earned certificates for a free, generously sized, slice of pizza at Upper Crust. Or perhaps they will venture next door to Whimsical Yogurt for five ounces of free frozen goodness or a small cup of Whimsical's scrumptious gelato.

Betti Cadmus of the Menifee School District* explained in depth how truly meaningful these contributions are to their education program. There are three main ways in which the certificates are used as incentives to both students and teachers collectively.

The donated certificates are used as incentives to students in and out of the classroom environment to reward both academic achievement and personal behavior. A student may earn recognition for consistently good grades or for personally improving their academic performance. In this way students are not measured against each other, but more so encouraged to do their personal best and to push themselves to continually achieve their own optimum performance.

Students are also being recognized for random acts of kindness towards others, serving their school, and general good behavior. Betti says, " This program has really helped a lot of students. It motivates individuals to step up their game, they see another student or friend receive a certificate (for free pizza or ice cream) and next time maybe they'll hold the door for someone with an arm full of books."

Her gratitude towards NY's Upper Crust and Whimsical is evident as she continues to explain, "Through the generosity of these donations we are able to encourage and acknowledge students like we have never been able to do before."

The third way in which the incentive program works is to emphasize the importance of ADA, the average daily attendance, in each classroom. Teachers and staff are encouraged to push attendance, which has resulted in an ongoing challenge competition of sorts between all sites in the Menifee School District.

The school with the biggest jump in attendance each month receives an impressive spread of recognition and reward. Each month, every staff member from the winning school receives a certificate from both Upper Crust and Whimsical. In addition, they are presented with the coveted traveling plaque that denotes highest attendance, which is proudly displayed in the front office for the duration of the month.

Heaven Scent Flowers in Menifee gifts the crowned school with a celebratory bouquet of flowers to display with their plaque, and Starbuck's Coffee at the Menifee Marketplace provides coffee for the entire staff.

The kindness and generosity shown by the owner of Whimsical and Upper Crust has really been exemplary in leading the movement for local educational support. It is because of these contributions that other local businesses in Menifee have followed suit and stepped forward to offer their services to help students in some way.

"From the very first time I met the owner, he vowed to help the district with a certificate program," Betti explains, "He truly understands the districts needs." With no budget for anything extra, the donated certificates have added an element of fun that was missing before.

This type of selfless community support is hard to come by, but Menifee School District and the surrounding Perris and Romoland communities feel very fortunate to be so generously gifted.

And the students, well they don't know how lucky they are.
